72mhz dipole

anyone experiment with adding a tuned di-pole antenna to your 72mhz rx? if so how did it compare to stock?

Don't know about 72 Mhz, but some 30 years ago, there was a sailplane variometer that worked on 27 Mhz. I had one, it only had a range of maybe 800 feet. Tried making a di-pole antenna for it, tuned it up with my grid dip meter. The di-pole antenna didn't make much difference, perhaps since the variometer receiver was designed for a single wire antenna.

The modern day 2.4 Ghz radios have a range measured in miles, far beyond visual line of sight.

I doubt that will work well. RC receivers are an unbalanced single wire antenna connection and the dipole is a balanced antenna. The impedance will be way off, and you would need some sort of parallel ladder line from the RX to the point the dipole splits to do it right. I have no idea of those old RXs have a 50 ohm input or what. But then the stock single wire antenna with no counterpoise is not all that great either as antennas go. But it works.
