The SpaceX encounter

Stanford students during the longest economic boom were philosophizing a lot more than during the recessions. It was much more crowded at 8pm than it was, many years ago. Steve Jurvetson was mingling with students with stars in their eyes, supposedly members of a class he taught. This was the generation which would fill SOMA in the coming years while the rest of us drove the taxis their mobile apps dispatched.

He swaggered into the parking lot, taking a picture of the line of space fans which would disappear forever into his iCloud account & never be tweeted of course. Lions supposed as he got older, Jurvetson had to diverge from the wild cards like SpaceX which made him famous to more on target startups in pizza delivery & philosophy. The days of guys programming registers in basements were over. A modern entrepreneur was a philosopher. Steve was now keen on fitting in that crowd.

The presentation was the standard boilerplate. Shotwell seemed a bit more specific than past videos. The questions were the standard big pictures, nothing technical, manely from Steve & nothing from the lion. Though there was no new media on the BFR nor the layout of the 1st stage engines, she did say the 1st full size Raptor was under construction, a new factory was going to be built rather than converting the Hughes factory, & they were now heavily focused on BFR development.

The amount of dialog & urgency on such a far fetched spaceship was most impressive. After watching so many dreams fade during the last 40 years, would say Elon is in a race against the next recession. The biggest risk is the next recession requiring yet another downsizing of the BFR, to where it was no longer fully reusable, had too many problems from cutting corners, or took another generation to finish.

For a company which reveals very little about its operations, they invest a lot in speaking tours. It may be a sign of the times that the generation famous for valuing experiences over things values in person presentations more than online lab notes.

20 years ago, the headliners were names like Linus Torvalds, Mark Andreesen. We waited in line & scoured the internet to find the next killer Linux app the same as those waiting in line & scouring the internet to find the latest BFR update. Everything changed in 20 years. Who would fill those seats in another 20 years? Maybe it would be someone who had walked on Mars.

Then, it was over. It was highly filtered from the public. They only answered heavily filtered questions. They didn't do any selfies or have a meet & greet. Perhaps times had changed since the 1st IAC speech, where Musk was bombarded with Burning Man questions & pitches for bus driving startups.

Slowly navigated up the campus after the speech, fighting the coughs, sore throat, & headache from smoke. Unlike a cold, it never cured itself. This is how single women feel all their lives & now the rest of us downwind of the forest fires were involuntarily afflicted. Then, it was a return to the stresses of the day job.

A golf cart stopped in front of the lion & dropped a student off. They must have a golf cart shuttle service like the lion kingdom's grad school did, many decades ago. Wondered if they drove like madmen like the old days.

The student seemed awfully grateful for the bog standard golf cart service. As the lion passed by, still hearing the student thanking the driver, her voice got clearer & sounded real familiar, straight out of thousands of videos the lion kingdom had watched & twitter searches about spacex. It was Shotwell.

Later, after thinking it over, the lion kingdom should have thanked her for reaching out to the public & gone for the selfie. It just seemed they drove her out because she was in a hurry & these are business executives, not movie stars or athletes. In hindsight, Retro Space Images had many selfies of himself with aerospace pioneers & Molly Wood had a selfie with Jurvetson.

There was a definite lean, but we went our separate ways.
