What balsa kit is a good build?

Hi everyone,

I've built other big propeller models, covered them in fiberglass, etc. and I've been out of the hobby for a while and was looking for a good model to build.

I'm looking for a cheapish kit (<$500) for just the wooden kit that is a large fighter jet, or some sort of jet kit that I will later build all the power systems, ducted motors, and stuff. That's a financial problem for now

So if anyone knows of a large jet kit I can build and potentially cover with fiberglass myself let me know

Thanks!

How large? ..that tends to be a relative question. RBC models make some great kit for edf..They just released a He 162 for 90mm

"Big kit" means different things to different people

Besides the true "kits" that Scott mentions (RBC's are excellent, and can be scaled up or down if needed), there are also excellent plans from Traplet and Ziroli, as an example.

Also, you fill find occasionally pretty decent plans on E-Bay.

I built a MiG-21 MF EDF 105mm pretty much out of my own plans, was not too hard but takes time, JC did the same thing :

Big EDF for me would be something like a Ziroli Panther which is 72" long with a 72" wingspan. It was designed for glow Dynamax power, and will fly fine on a good 12S 120-127mm fan setup. Plans and a full wood kit + plastic parts is around $500 from Ziroli.

+1 on that Arngeir

I am building the Z Panther now. If you are an old timer and like a wood build as much as I do you will love this one.

This is my Ziroli Panther. Flies great with a BVM 12s fan, Thunder Power 6600 mah packs and a ready to fly weight of 19 lbs.
I have 104 flights on it.

Wow thank you all for the helpful replies!

The biggest wooden plane I've been built was I think TopFlite 82" Cessna 182. Covered in fiberglass and painted. Probably too heavy to fly, it's always just hung around after building it with my dad long ago in high school.

It looks like Ziroli is one of the go to brands for these type of EDF aircraft.

The other option would be a Jet Hanger Hobbies kit. Fuse is fiberglass, wings are foam cores. You have to sheet the wings, build the ailerons, flaps, tail feathers ........

Lots of wood work that sill needs to be done by the builder.

Not all wood, but a good option.

There is Fiat G-91 in 1/6 scale available from a German shop. It comes as a short kit including clear canopy and depron jigs for 299€. Builder needs to supply wood for stringers, some spars and planking. Optional glass fibre ducting is available as well. 10-12s 90mm fan.

An L-39 would be awesome. Can I cover this with balsa and then fiberglass it?

Actually, you have to!

Here is a thread (sorry, it's in German, but lots of pictures) dealing with the Mirage 2000 kit from the same Czech company. It will give you an idea what to expect (i.e. a lot of strip planking).

Yep, stick build

The fuse is even halved so you don't need a jig for it

Here's a build thread on it I think ...

On the therccustomjets.cz there is a 1:3.5 scale made for turbine engines. Does anyone know of a build thread for that?

Would it be possible to use a EDF for the bigger one? I'd almost want to build the bigger one and put whatever engine it needs into it later + equipment.
