Fly for Tots Childrens Charity Fly-In - RCGroups Event Coverage

The 26th annual Fly for Tots at RDRC had a spectacular weekend of flying & fundraising! Check out our boots-on-the-ground coverage from Nikolei and see how much they raised!

Fly for Tots is all about the kids

26 years - over a quarter of a century - and a boat-load of money raised for charity - that's what makes Fly for Tots unique and awesome! This year saw 90 registered pilots at the RDRC field in Raleigh, NC for a fantastic weekend of flying, friends, family, food, fellowship and fund-raising! We were blessed again this year with excellent weather, thankfully a little cooler than last year. Winds were very light, so virtually anything and everything was able to get some air-time. The good weather helped bring several hundreds of spectators out to watch the show, and the clubs' brand new shade pavilion worked perfectly to give them a nice place to relax and enjoy.

Saturday and Sunday held our traditional noon demos; which showed off & educated the spectators on virtually all aspects of our great hobby. Long-time RDRC member and well-known Mustang enthusiast Drake Edwards passed away recently and was honored during the demos with a flight of his awesome Mustang by his son, Dane. Saturday was capped off with a very tasty traditional Carolina-style BBQ dinner and a live Bluegrass band called Clear Run! The evening air was perfect for golden-hour flying and the live music on top of it made it a very fun evening! Once the sun set, the night-flyers came out in force and we were even treated to a spectacular twilight flight of Jeff Stubs' BAE-Hawk complete with lights and smoke.

Sundays demo unfortunately resulted in a crash of the 2015 raffle prize, a giant-scale corsair, when it ran out of gas. Other than that, there were thankfully very few casualties. Shortly after the noon demos, the final last-minute raffle tickets were sold and the spinning of the drums began and winners were drawn. There was a vast array of things from flashlights to a granite fire-pit and $1000 set of tires in the general public drawing, as well as tool-sets to a ready-to-fly 60cc Extreme Flight Edge 540 in the R/C raffle! Many walked away happy with some winnings, including Charlie Lasley whom won the Edge 540 and my chiropractor whom won the new set of tires.

To end the 26th year of Fly for Tots, RDRCs club president Larry Lewis was presented with his brand new 7 day old grandbaby, wearing a onezie revealing the total amount raised this year...$13,233! Victory Junction will surely make that money stretch a long way, ensuring kids will continue to be able to enjoy this great camp free of charge. A big THANK YOU to all of the pilots that came to support Fly for Tots! If you weren't able to make it, we'd love to see you next year!

Please enjoy the photo flood below.
