Castle Phoenix Edge 80hv with Hacker motor

I fly with a club member that has a Wind 110 that flies on 8s. He is using the Castle Phoenix 80 he with a hacker motor. A while back we programmed brake in his ESC to slow down the plane for landings and down lines. It worked. However now when he throttled back up the motor makes a clunk sound. Anyone else have any other problems like this.

Yes. Check to see whether or not the logging function is turned on. If it is, turn it off and your problem will disappear. I had this exact same problem with the exact same setup on a WindS110. It took me a long time to solve this, but as it turns out, logging slows the esc processing just enough to cause the motor to hick-up.

Also, make sure that the Hacker motor he's using is not a 28 pole. If it is a 28 pole motor, the Castle ESC will not play nicely with that motor.

Another thing to look at is the amount of brake. For a 10s system 30% is about the maximum while smaller set ups can use a little more. During braking the ESC can't see the motors poles and it struggles to sync.

Thanks guys. Ill trying turning off the logging. Anthony we keep increasing the brake and it wasn't until 70% until it started braking at all.

What are your Brake Delay and Brake Ramp settings? Brake delay should be immediate and brake ramp should be medium. Brake strength <30% for 10s. Any delay will make the brake feel ineffective. A ramp higher than medium decelerates the motor too quickly and can cause damage. I have verified this!
