Most of the racers are coating them with West System Epoxy.
use foam brush, let soak in 15 min's, wipe surface with plastic spreader at 45 degrees to get excess off and let cure over night. Light weight, water and solvent proof and the wood grain shows. don't forget to put a light coat of epoxy on the inside to seal that also.
