Here's a cool new FPV plane that nearly anyone can fly, the SmartPlane Pro FPV. It's from a German company I've never heard of called TobyRich and they make several smartphone controlled aircraft. The SmartPlane Pro FPV is interesting because it can open up the world of FPV flying and make it more accessible for the masses. They don't have the store page up yet for this one, but the non-FPV bi-plane sells for $50 so we expect the FPV plane to land somewhere around $100-$150.
The SmartPlane Pro FPV comes with an FPV camera and video goggles and it's ready to fly right out of the box. It's made from durable foam and it's controlled by your phone using the free application. There are two ways to control the plane in the air, gesture mode where you tilt and angle the phone itself or by attaching the included joystick to your phone for a more tactile approach to flying. It's capable of some aerobatics like loops and it even has a hover ability that allows you to fly indoors. It uses a flight control system to auto stabilize the plane in flight which makes it easy to fly for beginners. It can fly for about 12 minutes and has a range of 100M. The camera resolution is 720x576, but no word on the transmission type. The goggles appear to be the Eachine EV800's which have a 5.8GHz receiver so it likely transmits analog which is great for latency.

Looks like a cool micro FPV plane!
But... control via smartphone and Bluetooth or WiFi? Not for me. Not even with the "joystick" dongle. Yikes! Just double or triple the price for anything that connects to a smartphone. I guess the high price speaks to the target market. Well heeled consumers won't hesitate to pay hundreds for the latest and greatest smartphone gadget. However, I think RC hobbyists with any flying will shy away due to control mechanism as well as price. |

if they;'re selling at BB, then the RF equipment is likely licensed by FCC and thus no HAM required. might explain the high price tag too, if they went through the hassle of getting their radios licensed.

This product has CE in Europe, and they did keep it on legal raceband channels for Europe (only 4 channels), but did they make a separate us version with lower output power? or did they sacrifice eu power to make one worldwide sku? My guess is they did a 25mw version only... Pure speculation, to be fair, but I've learned to trust my gut to lead me to the truth with these things. This could just come out in the wash, there is either a different sku #, or ce testing docs saying what the output power really is, and compare that to FCC regs and the id app they have with the FCC. At this time I can only find certs for the non-fpv version... But I'm curious 🙄 |

I'm still not sure how so many people get away with certifying 25 mw vtxs under FCC part 15.247 as a digital device, able to transmit outside of the ism band too... Maybe this isn't one of them, but that would really surprise me
