The People's Airplane

Hobbyking has just announced a 63" ARF modeled after the unique looking Evans VP-1 Volksplane. This balsa built-up electric monoplane has a detailed instrument panel inside an open cockpit, pilot bust, and control surfaces with large counterbalances built in. Here's what Hobbyking has to say about it: Enjoy simple, traditional flying that has lasted generations. The Volksplane design was first created by aeronautical engineer William Evans in 1968 and has delighted hobbists ever since. This yellow and grey US Version is made of lightweight balsa and plywood, featuring a printed PVC covering.

The almost ready to fly kit means that some assembly is required, although the parts count is low, meaning the Volksplane can easily be built in one evening. Use CA glue to complete this hobby plane that's easy to fly and great for beginners and enthusiasts.

The Volksplane comes with a pre-painted pilot and realistic cockpit fitted with dials and gauges. The magnetic top hatch is convenient and secure, providing easy access to the flight battery. Land steadily on aluminium landing gear featuring 100mm wheels with this great training plane.

Features:

  • Made of lightweight balsa and plywood
  • Uses electric powered motor (not included)
  • Aluminium landing gear with 100mm wheels
  • Magnetic top hatch for easy access to the flight battery
  • Pre-painted pilot and realistic cockpit fitted with dials.
  • Easy to fly and great for beginners

Looks like it'd be a lot of simple fun. I almost pulled the trigger on one earlier in the week but I blew my hobby budget this month already.

And most of my lunch, entertainment and gas budgets too.

It's good to see balsa making a comeback. I'll have to follow this one.

This one would be a great candidate for an in-cockpit pan and tilt fpv setup.

Voksplane = people airplane
I'm beginning to see a pattern in German vehicle naming conventions.
