Video... new Jet-x free flight!

VIDEO: Testing a prototype (new jet-x) at nearly sunset, when the winds are calm. Got 3 good flights. Great free-flight launch by Chris Sorensen, head of the new Jet-x project. This was a popular entertainment in the 1950s 60s and 70s, until the company went under. And this is the updated version, almost ready to make a comeback. Burn time on these babies were 10 and 20 seconds. Current energy is about 125 micro newtons (meter gram seconds), so it will power larger airframes than this tiny model. RC to come. Small hurdles remain before commercial production of these can begin (USA). (Production equipment, Certifications and testing for DOT, etc...) Will be crowd-funded. WOULD YOU BE INTERESTED in playing with these if the price was right??

So cool I have not lit up since the late 70's! Too much fun and I would love to launch a jet/ rocket plane again.

Ah, interesting. So not a Jetex-style motor with separate propellant pellets but rather an American reworking of the Rapier motors that are pretty much unobtainable now. Good idea.

Not quite the original Jetex, not the later Jet-X but another incarnation. So would the motors ship to Australia or is there a lot of (expensive) red tape to and bureaucratic bulldust to overcome?

Glen if you can rig up a "around the pole" rig the entire burn event can be watched up close and personal.
Dolly launch for a level flying speedy effort. Also can do a piggy back system to self start a second charge
via igniter wick from the end burn of the first allowing good RC duration. 4 engine stack would yield enough
time to fly some low passes then climb up for a glide phase. Could do low power longer burns for slow FF climb
rates, crawl mode like indoor.

Good luck on your efforts.

A clubmate and myself tried indoor RTP Jetex in the 70's. A small model from an Aeromodeller magazine design.

It went so fast (10 foot lines) that it was impossible to count the laps and time and then we had to open all the windows to survive the fumes.

Given all that, it was immense fun, we used a Jetex 50 iirc

The smell of burning Jetex pellets cannot be "Un-smelled" considering it was partly based on Guano!

I was all keen when the 1990's version was announced. But the cost at the time for pellets made the per flight cost a bit crazy.

So two things I wonder about. The website says they are not available to buy at this point. But I would like to learn what the estimated cost per motor will be.

Second is the temperature of the exhaust gasses. Could it set fire to really dry cut grass on a field for example? Or would it just blow the grass stalks out of the way?
