F-15/18 Park Jet (EDF) Questions

This is intended for those of you who have taken the great F-18 & F-15 Park Jets that Steve (jetset44) has designed, and converted them to EDF....

I have a pair of EDF-55 fan unitswith Himax 2015-5400's (http://www.e-flightline.com/ducted_fans.htm), Phoenix 25's, and a few Apogee 7.4V 2S1P 2080mAh Li-Po's (http://www.verticalhobbies.com) that I'd like to put in one of these. I had these units in a GWS A-10, and they are very solid.

So, what I'm looking for here is the overall concensus of what the experts think the performance will be in each of these airframes. Also, if I put this setup in one of these airframes, what kind of speeds can I expect, and what kind of reinforcements should I add?

Great idea, Mark! I can't wait to see what folks come up with and post here.

Hiya Mark!

Weather permitting, later this week, me and my mate Beat will try to bungee launch our Hornets, built from Steve's plans... Beat's is powered by two Vasa 55's and mine has a single WeMoTec MiniFan in the fuselage!

We weren't able to hand launch our F18's due to poor static thrust and / or too much weight, but we're pretty much sure that our birds will fly with the needed initial speed.

Best regards - and I'll keep you updated - Paco

Are you running brushless in these? Details?

Hehe... It doesn't fit through the car's side window - maybe I should have opted for a Pickup truck instead of the Alfa 156 I've just got!

Mine is:

WeMoTec MiniFan - 480 BB race - 3s2p 2400 ETec Lipoly - AUW 740G - 250G Thrust

Beat's is:

2x Vasa 55 - 2x Mini AC1215/16 - 3s1p 2000 ?? Lipoly - AUW 960G - 430G Thrust

Yeah, they're not really overpowered...

Best regards - Paco

Are you running both those EDF55's/Himax off of one ESC?

No, each fan unit has its own Phoenix 25 ESC. The ESC's are then Y'd to the receiver, and I'm using one Apogee 2S1P 2080mAh Li-Po to power the whole thing.

Do you know what the KV is on that AXI 1215/16 motor is? (tried to look it up but couldn't find the KV listed)

Looking at the battery packs, you REALLY need another pack to run both of those fans with some decent power a 3S2P would even be better. (Depending on what the KV and the amount of watts the motor is rated for.) The Packs are 10C and 14C Max. and running 2 motors splits the available amp's in half.

EDF re-maidens partially successful...

OK Guys,

we just came back from the flying field after another attempt to fly the EDF FA18's...

Bungee launching helped a lot with getting the Hornet to flying speed - but with the brushed 480BB Race, it simply wouldn't fly. If someone plans to install a MiniFan, go brushless from the beginning!

I was able to land it some 60meters down the runway, it didn't even had a scratch afterwards!

Well - it had to be tried out... Now, I'll remove the Fan and stick a Axi 2212/26 onto the FA18.

By the way, Beat's twin Vasa'd Hornet flew... But only barely!

Best regards - Paco (still high on adrenaline)

Ya needs MORE JUICE !!!!!! Glad to hear you got the twin flying, I'd love to see you keep the fan in the jet and toss in a Mega or even a Himax to see what it can do . Toss another pack into that twin and she should really move out

The MF 480 may be a bit starved for air as well from what I recall seeing in the other thread. The fuse of the depron F-18 isn't as deep as the Kevin Cox design so you are probably running less inlet area and lowering the thrust. I don't recall if you used inlet ducting or not, that would help of course, but there's not much you can do to make a brushed 480 more powerful. Brushless motors and EDFs are like peanut butter and bread, made for each other, with lipos being grape jelly! Brushed motors are more like brocolli on your bread instead of peanut butter....yuck!

This project has the potential to be a great conversion. Keep up the great work, the correct power setup is out there for someone to find. Do you have any pictures of your first power setup installation?

sure... Mine is the top picture (WeMoTec MiniFan) and Beat's is in the second pic (Twin Vasa) - these are our EDF experiments so far...
