Build Log

Fly Model Extra 330SC 30cc

Hello folks,
I'm going to start another detailed build (actually assembly since this is an ARF ) of the plane I'm currently flying (and enjoying).
I bought the kit from rcjetsworld (unfortunately the 30cc version is out of stock now). He is a Fly Model dealer in US.
I'll be writing this quite slowly so please check later for more details and updates if you're interested.

Manufacturer's Specs:
Wing span: 73"(1860mm)
Fuselage length: 70.4"(1788mm)
Wing Area: (70.2sq.d,)
Flying weight:9.9-12lbs (4500-5200g)

My setup:
Motor: Tomcat 30cc rewound to 217kv (rewind thread here)
12S 3300mAh 45C (two 6S lipos in series)
ESC: Hobbywing Platinum HV V3 100A 5-12S
Propeller: 19x10/ 19x12 TURNIGY ULTRA-LIGHT WOOD PROPELLER 19X12
Ailerons/ Elevators:
Goteck HC1621S HV Digital MG High Torque STD Servo 23kg / 0.12sec / 53g
Rudder: XQ-S4020D

Power system data:
Quick run with fully charged brand new lipos (2 cycles):
12S 3300mAh 45C
19x10 Aerostar wood propeller(I'm currently flying with a 19x12 wood prop but haven't check the numbers. Pitch speed is awesome with the 19x12.)
3075W (peak)
66.33A (peak)
RPM=8160 (checked on a 2nd run thus under slightly lower voltage)

Covering film used:
Covering Film Solid Jacinth (5mtr) 118
Covering Film Solid Silver (5mtr) 115
Covering Film Solid Black (5mtr) 114

The plane was shipped from CA to NJ then my sister brought it to Brazil for me. The kit was very well packed and in a surprisingly small box. This was due to the smart design of the trailing edge at the wing root which was separated from the main wings. This allowed for a very narrow box.

Motor Box

After building a few boxes I can say I really prefer them over stand-offs.

Looks good Ronaldo. As always I look forward to the completion and seeing what gear you use.

I would be interested in how this puppy flies, Extreme Hype and Pilot are the only available and descent flying 3d arf in my part of the world, that is, arf's that I know of.

Thanks Chris, I'll be updating this thread and should have it completed by the weekend.
RCflip, plane flies great, almost no coupling on KE. I'll post a few videos as soon as I finish writing the build log.
I can't order EF/3DHS planes from Brazil (shipping is insanely expensive) so I have no experience with these brands but I'm sure they are really well designed and manufactured. I may travel to US in October on vacations and I'm thinking about getting the new 74" Slick 580.

Thanks Ronalpn, EF are quite good in my experience, the manufacturing is no different to other brands and flight characteristics are also quite good but the associated hype train is way over the top.

More interested in a build log and flight log, a bit like an old school magazine write up, I never watch flight videos they do not interest me. Having said that many may be interested in a video and will be very appreciative.

Hinging control surfaces

Using rudder as an example but method applies to all control surfaces.
Again, I use thick CA for this job (it gives me some time to align the control surfaces).
Check the control surface for free movement after 15min or so while the CA hasn't cured completely. If there is a bit of glue on the axis you should be able to break it enough to allow movement. Flex the control surface slowly and clean the center of the hinge using CA debonder until it moves freely.

Wing root pieces at the trailing edge

I glued the trailing edge piece without checking for correct clearance with the aileron. The result was a very misaligned gap and I had to cut off the piece and glue it again.
