That's what I always use for video anyway, so I wouldn't really mind

As far as I can judge from the picture, it looks like the lens has a bit of protection and maybe even a hint of a buildin sunshade?

Yes, a little protection for the lens.
Also you can remove the lens protector and replace it with a CPL.

That extra sunshade on the sides could be really useful in avoiding lens reflections, last time I used the Git2 I couldn't avoid getting the sun on the lens even though the sun was about 90 degrees to the direction I needed to point it and that does spoil the quality of the image, the Git2 lens sticks out a bit. The G3 did better but still needed to point it slightly the wrong direction to avoid the sun reducing the contrast. Using the G3 with a bit of zoom allows use of a decent sunshade if you remember to take it with you.

I like that feature, also good for fitting a sunshield, this is my G3 Slave camera with lens protector replaced by extra large sunshield!
Fits on so much better than with the Git2.
(Also keeps the rain off the lens)
