Conway/Uravitch L-39 Albatros Plans mash

I crashed my big L-39 last year and wanted to replace it. I needed something to keep me out of the bars and casinos so I decided to build a new
one.

My last one was based on Andy Conway's 90mm design scaled up 120%. I figured that was a good starting point for a new plane. Andy was kind enough to provide me a copy of his latest plans. His new design took the 90mm L-39 and modified it for a 70mm fan. The smaller intakes looking a bit more scale. Since I had a Sapac 100mm fan sitting in the box and I figured that might be a good fit to a scaled up version of Andy's latest 70mm design. So I measured the intakes and determined that enlarging the design by 125% would fit the FSA inlets just fine. Some of the internal duct work needed minor resizing.

Andy's plane is designed for a bungee and I wanted retracts so I either had to modify Andy's wing design or get a different design.

As it turns out Rich Uravitch had designed a wing with retracts for the old CMP L-59. That looked like just the ticket. Rich had posted his wing plans on rcgroups. His wing is a little thicker so will help with the retracts a bit more.

So instead of kit bashing I will be plans mashing if you will.

So a little pdf enlargement of the plane and a copy of the wing plans and off to the printers I went.

Some scissors , some glue , a few hours on the scroll saw and I had beginnings of a short kit.

Some progress so far.

My JR radio died this weekend and I dont have a backup so good thing I have something to build.

Still a long ways to go but fingers crossed.

Hi Ken,
Nice. I'm looking forward to seeing this fly some day. Maybe at the Jet Jam next June?

Got a little more work done. Balsa nose, inlet ducting with a little flow helper and started the wing, lots of time on the scroll saw cutting out ribs.

Also started on the nose gear mounts, a bit of thinking still to do on that one.

Slow progress, but progress none the less

Had to move the flap servo location to fit the struts and wheel size I wanted

And a quick dry fit for motivation

Working the inlet ducts

Gotta slow the progress down or I'll have nothing to work on this winter

Or worse be ready to paint this winter.

started working the inlet duct

wet the balsa and then formed and let dry by wrapping around a coffee can

After they were dry I did a test fit, close but not good enough, so I wet them again and clamped them in place to dry

After they dried I cut them to fit and glassed the inside with a light coat to seal it.

After that cured I glued the lower ones in place, once that is cured I'll install the upper ones.

much progress this weekend

got the motor mount in, back framed up and made the rudder

the new plans have a sheet rudder, but the old plans had a built up rudder. so I went ahead and used the old plans to make a built up rudder.

The elevator is just a flat sheet, I'll probably plot out an airfoil and make a built up elevator.

Time to clean up, put things aside and get ready for E-jets
