OpenTX for F5J

It has been suggested on the Ultima thread that having a thread dedicated to providing information on using OpenTX for F5J would be a good idea.

So here it is.

The intention for this thread is to make it informational, not a discussion thread.

I will post my F5J program later, it's pretty simple. I will also find some YouTube videos I found useful and post links etc

It would be good if somebody could post a summary of what e-soar does and where to find it.

So let's open it up for discussion and questions. I'll delete the discussion part later and maybe build an FAQ From the questions.

Of course if there are no questions and nothing to discuss I'll close the thread and let it die.

EDIT. Just discovered that as the thread originator the only option I have as the moderator is to close the thread. That's a pity but thems the rules for RCG. Hopefully we won't attract too much clutter.

What I will do is try to maintain some sort of index up front with pointers to particularly useful posts and why they are useful. It really is a pain sorting through pages of "yes it is, no it isn't" posts looking for something. It was that problem that prompted me to start this.

This is a good idea, I've had to search a lot of threads to get a basic idea of the different options people are using for the Taranis.

I am flying Taranis on my DLGs with extremewing's program. I'm able to make all the changes I need to get them flying the way I like. Now I'm investigating F5J/Taranis setups. I've flown different models, and radio systems, so I have a basic idea of what I want the program to do.
I am reading the setup PDF for e-soar plus and see a couple of things I would change. Are there other packaged programs out there? It seems that there are a couple of guys who "roll their own". If I decided to make my own, and I'm not sure I will, what are some of the pitfalls I should look to avoid?

Thanks in advance.

I'm an E-Soar plus user, running a modified version as I want a couple different things. I run a secondary motor timer with 30s countdown triggered by FM2/Power, and also a secondary throttle cut switch that allows me to quickly cut/re-enable throttle (and the annoying beep) without affecting the flight timer.

the other thing I do is to setup one of my analog knobs to control aileron/rudder mixing, so I can adjust the amount in-flight.

If you look at this and take the time to see how and why he did the setup his way it will make it pretty easy for you to make changes.

Thanks for starting the thread Frank. Just a suggestion for us Taranis/Horus newbies: it would be helpful to know how a particular F5J-useful feature was implemented in addition to posting the full setup. I have watched hours of OpenTX vids and have a good basic idea of how it all works.

So a few things on my for-starters wishlist:

1. Set up a single arming switch that enables a motor slider _independent_ of flight modes. I'm not a fan the tricky arming sequence in eSoar Plus.

2. Add an F5J talking timer for practice that counts up the first 30sec and then counts down every min, etc. I imagine there are several ways to implement this. I just want to make sure that the practice talking timer prompts do not interfere with other system prompts that need to get played for alerts, etc.

That's it for now. More soon.

The way I implement a talking timer is to load the file as a background music file that is activated by a switch. I use SH, which I swapped over so it is the two position non-spring loaded on the top left. The other prompts will come over top of a background music file. It just needs to be a wav file, but there are some restrictions on the type that works.

I have a file that does a 30 second countdown to launch, a horn, a notification at 25 seconds into the motor run, and then 1 minute and finer time gradient towards zero. Mine is here:

My e-glider program arms the left slider motor control with a single switch, which announces "motor enable" or disabled, and also enables my other flight modes when I switch out of launch mode. I used elements of Mike's e-Soar program, like the calibration procedure, but the rest of it is completely different, such as the channel assignments to use a 4ch. Rx with SBus, differential set-up, etc., etc. I don't have any documentation though, so it is far less useful to others than Mike's nicely detailed program. I can post it, but I'm not sure it is of much use without a detailed explanation of how to set it up and use it, which I doubt I'll ever write.

Here are a couple of other documents for you to look at. It's been a while since I've looked at them but I think they are still valid. If anyone wants a copy of my 30 second.wav or 2 minute.wav just ask.
I didn't use the internal system count because I wanted it my way.

I just changed the second placeholder post to be a list of links to downloads. I am setting up a dropbox account for people to upload programs.

I am liking the response to this thread so far, I think we can make it something really useful. OpenTx is a great system but can be daunting when first tackled. It took a while for me to get my head around it but I think that it's most important characteristic and what I believe is central to its' utility is that you get to define directly the relationship of each individual servo movement to any or all of the stick or switch movements.

Awesome help Kevin, Kerry, and Frank. Thanks guys. I agree this thread has great potential.

Here's another request: Limit the motor slider so that during launch even if you push the slider back to zero the motor will spin at idle speed. This allows you to better search for low thermal bubbles without fear that your motor will shut off.

Thanks for this dedicated thread. Huge +1 for E-Soar Plus (ESP), which I've slighty modified some switches for my preferences. I use it currently with 2 F5J birds (Pike Perfection, Ultima), and about to program a new 3rd one (P-Dynamic).

I'm using ESP on a Taranis Plus 2.19, and been thinking about scooping up a Horus and running OTX 2.2. Has anyone transfered F5J models in Companion from a Taranis Plus 2.19 to a Horus 2.2 and were there any issues?

Arming switch. SD forward to arm CH1 for throttle. Switch warning on SD
