CVE 97 Hollandia from Glynn Guest Plans

My adult, eldest son wanted to build a CVE since his grandfather, my father, served on the CVE 97 Hollandia during WW 2. He was one of the navigators and was also a gunnery officer assigned to the aft 5 inch gun. I found a Glynn Guest designed stand off stand off scale WW2 era CVE dubbed the Bodega Bay. I purchased the magazine and plans several years ago. Today he started working on the hull.

I am the technical consultant and in charge of documentation as well.

Today we started out with plans and sheets of balsa and ended up the something that looks somewhat like a hull.

Great to see a father-son build which is quite appropriate for today. I'll be following.

There's an ongoing build thread on MBM that you'll want to use for reference. Lots of nice pics of other CVs, too, for inspiration. Have fun!

Thanks Herrmill,.
We had a lot of fun. It turns out that unbeknownst to me my son is a bit of an expert on WW2 naval warfare. It will be a while for build session #2. He lives an hour away and my mother-in-law needs some TLC.

Build Session 2

My co-builder lives a two hour round trip away so build sessions are not as frequent as we would like. We were building at my house but since I am of a certain age and my time is more flexible we decided to build at his house and save him the commute.

The simplified Glynn Guest hull builds quickly. The major parts were cut out and the deck, bulkheads and hull bottom were assembled on day 1. The deck and hull bottom and deck were faired and the 1/3 of the hull sides were glued in place in build session 2.

Build Session 3 - hull sides.

Tonight was day three of the build. The sides of the hull are complete except a small portion of the starboard bow.
In the WW2 photo of the CVE 97, it is resplendent in it's splinter camouflage. We hope to duplicate that.

Hi Robert,

Nice to see you and your son have started your build. It's looking good.

I might get encouraged to do some more on mine.

Other builds on here are:

Bruce,
Thanks for the two links. They are both very helpful.
I had seen yours before but I had not seen RCBoaters thread.

Antipodes,
Thanks. That is a definitive reference. It shows port, starboard and deck views with the exact pattern and color for each area. That is a big help.
