Adding FPV
I just ordered this FPV setup:
https://hobbyking.com/en_us/visionplus-fpv-goggles.html https://hobbyking.com/en_us/quanum-e...8ghz-ntsc.html Using it to position the camera for recording. Will use a servo to rotate the gimbal .... Now to figure out how to record... |

Denison Converted my Southampton to use a GoPro camera, learned some lessons. first is that the weight needs to be close to deck level(boat tenderness affects the video), boat must be very handy in the positioning, the gimbal setup will help in the Shot area but will make the operation very busy. Also during operation the camera boat must be the one to clear traffic and not interfere with the others on the water. Also need to figure out the video editing program as there is a lot of extranous video in the making. figure the ratio of video to finish around 15%.

The idea of a dedicated camera boat is interesting. Could you do it with two radios? The pilot would operate the boat, while the cameraman operates the camera functions. Both standing next to each other so the cameraman can direct the pilot where to head for the drama shots. That way the pilot can be focused on controlling the boat.
I've always thought this would make for a fun rc tank setup too. One driver, one gunner, two radios. Dave |

Thanks for the comment. I plan to have enough ballast in the hull to keep it still. I had tinkered with possibly adding outriggers too. And agreed, the impact of the boat is to remain to the side or way in front. It will double as a mark-setter / rescue boat too.

The more I dig in to this the more I think it should be a 2 person operation but I really want to keep it single and with 6 channels. I would need 2 for throttle & rudder; 1 to turn on cameras; 1 pan; 1 tilt; 1 lower and raise rescue arm.
I've ordered this FPV setup Quanum ELITE QB58 TX CAMERA COMBO Micro Cam VTX 25mW 40CH 5.8GHz (NTSC) Visionplus FPV Goggles W/ Integrated 5" TFT Monitor And 40 Channel Receiver I was thinking the goggles would be on the transmitter so I can see the camera recording while watching the boat itself. I need to figure out the recording. Quote:

I was talking with a friend who bought a very expensive quad copter for use in commercial advertising and real-estate marketing and the like. His machine had a pan and tilt fpv system that also doubled as a pilot view, so with the push of a button the camera would center straight ahead so he could fly by video feed. But while the machine was following a pre-made waypoint flight path, he could pan the camera around. The entire time a high quality video feed was coming in to the screen on the controller. The video was being recorded on the ground and to an board memory card to be retrieved after landing. Now with multi channel fpv systems, you could split screen two feeds, one for the pilot, the other for the panning system. Save the feeds separately, or even just the pan feed, for video editing later.
With your layout for the controls mentioned, a typical 6 channel aircraft layout would work. Two double gimbal sticks, one for the boat, one for the camera. The landing gear switch (on/off) to engage the camera, the flap control (variable) for the arm. Dave |

Thanks Dave, I'm going to keep this idea of yours in mind. I'm hoping I can get it done in time for the Cdn IOM Nationals in Alberta. Should be able to get some super cool footage.

It will need a 2 man crew, but it only needs one controller. The other crewman would be an observer to offer advice to keep the FPV boat out of trouble. Steering the boat and framing shots you lose awareness of things going on around you, an extra pair of eyes helps.

Interesting to think of it being a 2 person crew.. I was actually thinking of using a way point gps for a set pattern. I'd have the vessel far enough from the racing and also hook up an override in case I need to reposition it.

Too top heavy :(
Bummer I went to float test the boat and #1 - Too top heavy. I guess the weight of the camera had leverage on the single hull; #2 - not enough balast, boat was too low after putting enough ballast in to try to support camera.
Next step now is lower the height of the camera and maybe get a carbon fiber tube. |
