Align T-REX 500XT TOP Combo

The T-Rex 500XT TOP Combo will include the same electronics as the 500X with the exception of the integrated torque tube system.

The T-Rex line of helicopters is getting an efficient torque tube upgrade based on customer feedback.

Align is on the move again with results from customer feedback. Align released the 470LT yesterday and now they have the new 500XT out. We can almost say that they are planning on upgrading the whole fleet of T-Rex helicopters to the new torque tube set up. The T-Rex 500XT TOP Combo will include the same electronics as the 500X like the Microbeast plus, DS530M/DS535M HV servos and the power system which includes the RCE-BL80 ESC and the 520MX motor that provides plenty of power for this 500 class bird.

The 500XT will also include the 500EFL rotor head and all the new features from the previous model with the exception of the integrated torque tube system. This will bring back the efficiency that the belt drive system has a little trouble comparing too. Either way you go, the 500 class helicopter is the perfect size to power ratio for the avid pilot and can be transported a lot easier than the larger classes.

Efficient Torque Tube Drive Upgrade Design
More like a downgrade.

I'm so confused... I thought all Align's had TT... lots of folks complained, so they started putting in Belt Drive, now they are back to TT again? Is it a downgrade, an upgrade, or a flip/flop?

Torque tube is more efficient than belt for electric.
TT cost more to repair
Belt has static and need to adjust all the time.
I wonder when this will be out?

Direct drive belt (auto rotation pulley on mainshaft like Mikado, Compass, etc) is more efficient. TT use a layshaft and three 90 degree gears (two for layshaft one in tail gearbox). Each stage imposes a power loss. Also gear friction increases with RPM, belt friction is constant.

Auto tensioner on belt tail drives eliminates the need for adjustment.

I said direct drive belt is smoother, on the helifreak 470 forum, and I got crucified by some "experts".

It does seam like a strange move but offering buyers the choice can't be a bad thing. Personally I'd probably go the belt option as I find them more robust and if anything less maintenance.

I wonder if the side frames are different between the two versions? The belt has the auto rotation pulley on top of the main gear instead of below like on this TT version.

EDIT: Looks the same in the pictures at least, you might have issues with the flat on certain motors though because the pinion has to be at a different height on the shaft between the two versions.

Belts are lighter too, I just built the extended boom for my Rush 750 and I couldn't believe how heavy it is.
