I finally got my Dandy closer to flight ready. Keen eyes will notice the SwitchBack tail feathers. Need to finish hinging the rudder and complete the end points/rates etc. in the DX6. May add a little trim work but I doubt it. Got lucky and found some matching transparent red Solite in the scrap box and some weird blue transparent covering to make the tail feathers kinda match the wing. AUW is 12.3 ounces. I used an AXI 2212/34 motor with an APC 10x7SF prop and it put out 122 watts with a partial charged 3S 1000mah pack! Entirely too much power! I'll prop it down for maybe 80 watts or so. This bird shouldn't be a powerhouse. Maybe I'll get a chance to maiden this weekend.

LOL Axi, of course it has pep! Wise motor choice. Lowest kV of the 2212 series.

But pitch of prop is way too high - pitch speed too high for this kind of bird.

They recommend 10 x 7 only for sailplane but that would be a fast sailplane - warmliner?

The last time this AXI was used my "good" Thunder Power packs were 7C. Lucky to hold 10 volts under load. This motor/prop only gave me around 90 watts back then. If the pack I used today was fully charged I might have seen 130 watts. Batteries are SO much better these days!

I measure my packs about 15-25C, but Graphenes are supposedly about 32-35C.

Axi allows 14.8 oz for a 3D plane, to 21.2 oz for a trainer, so yours is going to be peppy!. I think I have a spare 2208/34 somewhere here.

I kind of remember your car license plate back from Chandler Bowl years ago. Where do you plan to maiden her?

The Dandy looks really good RW&B.

I haven't been to the C.B. since probably 2004-2005. I'll either fly Higley bowl or Area 51.

Where is Area 51? Do I need a secret password?

Flight of my 55 gram F949 RTF at Rancho San Antonio went well. That is the nearby park designated for non-fuel RC aircraft. I used both batteries in an increasing breeze without a crash. People were friendly, including a woman who said she took my picture for one of the local newspapers.
Maybe my simulator experience on my virtual model airplanes helped. Certainly, my control line experience and that with the 25 gram two channel RTF helped.

It's the exact same kit. The only thing semi new in mine is the fuselage and it was built to end up as a pod and boom scratch build until your thread changed my mind. This is Dandy #3 or #4 for me. The wing is 8+ years old. I'm not exactly sure when I built it. The tail feathers are from a Mountain Models SwitchBack and are all that survived a horrific crash well over 10 years ago. I don't throw ANYTHING away. Even the scrap wood from kit builds is saved in several boxes. I cut ribs and even scratch built an entire plane from kit scrap!

Please excuse the lack of progress. I watch children next week, and am only thinking of things that can be flown in a small quiet space in Palo Alto.

David,

Many years ago when one generally had to build in order to fly, and few had a fleet of planes, building often involved marathon efforts. At least for me, all that has changed and now when I work on a built, how much gets done in a building session is of no concern or thought. As well, it is no concern whether five minutes is given during the day or ten hours. or if other task take me off a project temporarily.

Enjoy the kids.... we do here as well.
