Runway improvement grants

Hello,

I am the president of a medium sized club in the northeast (80-90 active members). We have a 1000' runway that is usually beautiful grass. Last year was extremely dry, and much of the grass has died back.

Usually, when we have a few brown spots, they 'green up' come next spring. Well, this year, despite plenty of rain, we have several swaths of bare dirt, which is quickly filling in with weeds. Around the edges of the dead spots, we have clumps of crabgrass, which can catch and flip even giant-scale planes.

Is there any club assistance for turf-management? The cost of a complete stripping and reseeding will be prohibitive to our club.

The AMA has a the Flying Site Improvement Grant that a club can apply for. If approved, the club would receive a grant of up to 10% of the costs for approved items. Generally, operational costs such as gas for mowers or typical maintenance costs are not eligible. Your situation would probably be accepted. The requests are ranked against the other requests for that year, and approved based on allocated funds. The application process is done for this season, so your club would need to wait till next year to apply.

Here is a link to more info from the AMA. http://www.modelaircraft.org/members...itegrants.aspx

Hope this helps

Darryl
