Spring Time = Fly Time!

Raleigh-Durham Radio Control (RDRC) is one of the largest clubs in North Carolina, and is well known for their fall event 'Fly for Tots' which has raised over $200,000 over the years for a local special-needs kids camp. Last weekend, they hosted a Spring Fun Fly to get everyones' thumbs warmed up from the winter. In the past this was an electric-only event, but was changed to a bring anything, fly anything style this year. The weather gods were gracious enough to clear the rain and strong winds away to give us a beautiful sunny spring day to fly in. With temps in the low 80s and only occasional gusts to 15, the flight line stayed busy the whole day.

Aircraft of all shapes, types and sizes from racing quads to scale helis, gas aerobats, pylon racers and warbirds found their way to the paved runway. With the exception of the contest directors unfortunate jet crash due to an in-flight fire, there were very few mishaps the whole day. I for one was very lucky when discovering after landing that the Rx battery on my new ARS-300 had wiggled free of its strap and tried to escape through the canopy...thank God for servo clip retainers!!

Raffle tickets for a 50/50 pot as well as a bevy of prizes including the new PNP Commander from E-flite were sold during the day, of which many were won by attending members of a near-by club 'The Propbusters'. A local girl-scout troop was on-site with some excellent hot dogs, chips and drinks to keep our bellies happy, and a popcorn vendor even popped up some fresh salty-sweet kettle corn for us to munch on...man was that ever a tasty treat! Their brand new shelter which was just completed is huge and provided lots of room and shade for the vendors and spectators.

Be sure to keep an eye on RD-RC.com for info on their next events; including the First in Flight Jet Rally in May, Blast from the Past Vintage Fly-In in July, and the famous Fly for Tots in September!

And now...the photos! Enjoy!
