Build Log

F-16 70mm edf by Freewing

I picked up one of these as an "airframe only" from MRC for $159 :

http://sz-freewing.com

https://www.motionrc.com/products/fr...mm-edf-jet-arp

They also sell it (the airframe only but with LG) for $104 in China :

https://www.aliexpress.com/item/RC-a...782118518.html

It seems slightly larger than my JePe F-16 (35" ws vs 31" ws) :

https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/show...by-Jepe&pp=100

so a rough comparison will be interesting.

On this one the wingspan is 88 cm and the length is 131 cm, whereas the real one has a 9.96m wingspan at a 15.06m length

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genera...ighting_Falcon

so the model is in the ~ 1:11.4 scale range.

I plan to possibly have a tailerons only setup, to reduce wing drag.

Fan will be an 70mm one with quality inrunner, and a 150A YEP esc I already have.

Finish will be in a simple 1984 Belgian TigerMeet scheme, which I have done a few times before ...

Fan setup will be either 70mm WeMoTec MiniFan EVO, or a (properly balanced) 80mm FMS fan, as I discussed here earlier :

Might try a Schuebeler DS-30 carbon fan in it at some point, possibly, or perhaps just the shroud to save some weight ...

Here's a side-by-side size comparison to my hollow molded composite JePe F-16, https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/show...by-Jepe&pp=100

which is slightly smaller (31" ws vs 35" on the FW one) and yet flew/flies on a 90mm fan

It's quite comparable in size to the Freewing F-104 70mm edf, https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/show...reewing&pp=100

and a bit smaller than my larger Freewing F-16 90mm, https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/show...reewing&pp=100

The WeMoTec MiniFan EVO 70mm fits right in nicely

The 62mm outlet is way too large for a decent 70mm fan setup, so that will have to be fixed, plus that step looks pretty bad.

Foam hinges don't work too well on fast EDF's, they tend to fly off eventually, so I rehinged everything using blenderm hinge tape.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00HHR4RHQ?th=1

It is the exact same one that Dubro / Tower has been selling for years :

https://www.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...1p?&I=DUBQ0916

Reinforcements were glued in using pu glue, and servo openings were closed with tape.

To install the fan, that plastic cheesegrater had to come out ... Also it will be easier to install the ESC if that ply tray comes out as well.

This is incidentally the stock $46 unit that comes with the 6S Freewing 12bl plastic fan / outrunner setup,

https://www.aliexpress.com/item/New-...528302267.html

3048-2150kv outrunner motor ... https://www.motionrc.com/collections/motors/freewing

I don't own one (fan or motor), so I really have no idea how it performs...

It seems rather similar to these other inexpensive "don't fit in the shroud" outrunner motors :
