You can build Mark Drela's APOGEE as an all balsa ship (carbon boom of course) and the performance will be exceptional. Mine was 2 channel with a cruciform tail.

Check out the Gambler + thread. Great plane and you can buy the plans only if you so desire. I would just go with the kit. Cheap, excellent quality and the thing is a blast to fly.

Also check out the Bug. The plans were originally published in Radio Control Modeler magazine :

If you build the Bug (good plane by the way - got me hooked on HL) go for the extra #3 rib and cruciform tail modifications discussed in the Yahoo group - both improve the performance of the Bug.

Good thing balsa floats!

yorbenator - Get the Gambler plans. It's much more advanced than the bug and besides, the bigger your span, the better your float time will be.

Allan - You're being modest. By the time you bought the bug plans, adapted the plan for the extra R3, adjusted all of the spar holes and bought the back order issue to get the building instructions, a guy coud just buy the Gambler drawings and be ahead of the game.

Thanks Chris - I try not to toot my own horn, so wherever I can give constructive input on alternatives I try to. I appreciate your praise.

Allan is too modest. Buy his plane and you'll never be sorry. I have never heard a single complaint about the Gambler +. The kit is priced at less than what it would cost you to chase/order all the components to build it. Plus it's laser cut. The price is so cheap your wife won't leave you when she sees the bill. Best of all, Allan and his horn section (Of which I'm a member. Some body has to toot the horns for him) are all here to help you with advice, mods or a good ribbing when you accidently lawn dart it into your wife's car.
