Mini-Review

FMS/RocHobby 1100mm MXS

The single-seat, carbon fiber MXS is an aerobatic plane manufactured by MX aircraft with a design emphasis on performance and agility. At 420 degrees/second, it has one of the fastest roll rates among aerobatic planes of its class.

I have the opportunity to try out the model, FMS/RocHobby 1100mm version of this plane.

Edit - Had it categorized as a "Mini-How-to" instead of "Mini-Review". Corrected that.

Unboxing

Thanks, taz. I was going to mention the dedicated thread (1st one you listed), like I do in all my reviews, but you did it for me.

The other two threads you posted are a review and a notification for that review by the same guy. There is some good information there too.

My review may be a bit slower than usual since I've been a bit tied-up in the last few weeks.

You're more than welcome to fly this one, Dale. NC's just a bit too far for me to bring it over.

Sorry, man. I've been badly tied-up at work (which stops most of my RCG browsing ). In fact, I had intended to make this post last week. This happens to me every year just a bit after Thanksgiving (and I'm not even in the retail sector). Some years its worse than others (like this year) but usually end January things calm down. Then I get to come back and make my dumb remarks on ooOoo's thread (and elsewhere).

Assembly

As noted in my earlier post and on the dedicated thread, the included hardcopy manual is wrong about the LG screw specs. Longest ones go on the wings. Online manual is correct: https://www.fmsmodel.com/fileuploade...1470130758.pdf

Testing

Control surface hinge strengthening and current draw check are the two things left to do prior to maidening. CG check and control throw check didn't involve anything outside of what is mentioned in the manual so I'll skip going over those details.

Maiden

mxsmaiden (3 min 23 sec)

I read about twitchiness on the dedicated thread and so I jammed the lipo all the way forward to the firewall (wasn't certain that aft CG didn't contribute to it with high throws). I also dampened the control throws a lot: 30% servo travel adjust on ailerons and elevator and 40% travel on rudder. Put throws ~5mm below the low rates. The overkill made it hard to hover or knife edge but there are some humorous attempts in the video. The saving grace was that the maiden was smooth as silk and the handling was very easy. As for the piloting itself, that's just Dale's fault for not showing up and flying the plane for me.

Thanks for caring, Apex. I could have been in Hugo's basement. Never know what might have happened then.

Yeah, usually I do a thorough read of the dedicated thread before assembling. They're a gold mine of information.

Just saw this...well done.....i have several planes that others have called twitchy ...I have found them not to be twitchy. i set them up like my other planes ...neutral cg..full throw..hi rates....minimum expo...they flew fine...i think those other people did not have a light touch on sticks and were over controlling.I over controlled when i first started hahhah..not any more I think you have the potential to do some 3D ....so just do it.
