The annual Punkin Chunk F3K contest held by the North Atlanta Soaring Association went down on November 4-6. This year the contest was held at a new venue, one familiar to myself and many others. It was held at none other than the Pecan Patch Airstrip hosted by Mark and Judy Murdock. This place is amazing and is a fantastic location for a DLG contest.
It was an amazing weekend for weather and everyone had smiles on their faces regardless of their position on the score sheets. Friday was a fun day with a 1M contest, open flying and the All Up Last Down competition. After hours there was night flying, fireworks and bonfires to enjoy.
Saturday morning the contest started out with a Poker round which made things interesting before the air became really active. We flew 9 rounds with no stops and had 4 groups. The thermals were working, but it was still challenging at times. We flew 5 more rounds on Sunday where Frank came out on top in a tight race, Congrats! Rich took 1st in sportsmen class and was immediately given the boot up to the expert class.
The Punkin Chunk is a fun laid back contest that you should not miss. It helps support a great cause at Mission 22 and it is always great to spend a weekend flying and hanging out with friends new and old. Thanks for to Burt, Jan Eric, Mark, Judy and all involved in making this thing happen. We'll see you next time!!!
