SPAD Race Boise Idaho

Today we had a SPAD pylon race hosted by BARKS, Boise Idaho.

It was a lot of fun with a good turnout and perfect weather.

Yep, Das Plastics!! We allow the fuselage to rotate 180 degrees, and we cut the spars down to 7/8 in tall. We also can rotate the motor, and put all servos inside cleaning up the air frames. Most guys run dual aileron servos too.
We can run the OS 55ax or the ASP/Magnum .52 XLS with the baffles removed from the mufflers of all engines, on 10x8 APC sport props, and 15% nitro fuel.
Speed test put them in the 93-96 mph at around 14,300 rpms. Both motors are pretty close, with a very slight edge to the ASP or magnums running just a bit higher rpms.
We have to meet sound at one of the flying fields, and cant exceed 96 db at 9 feet from more than 1 of the 4 cardinal compass points, and the above setup just makes it. Other prop brands like master aircrew fail the db meter, and are slower, even scimitars.
We run 2 pylons set 400 feet apart. We typically run 4 pilots per heat, 5-6 total heat races that are 10 laps long. At 2 of the sites, the top 4 fastest qualifiers go to the trophy race, and that race is 15 laps and the top 3 get trophies or plaques. Can come real close on a 6 ounce tank with ASP and Magnums, OS is a little more fuel efficient.
At BARKS, we run our races Reno style: 4 pilots per heat, 6 heats at 10 laps, and then we take the top 4 fastest to go for 15 lap trophy races in Gold, next 4 go to Silver, then next 4 to Bronze trophies races. We then hand out trophies or plaques to the top 3 in each trophy round, so 9 folks go home with something in hand for their efforts. Man is it ever fun!!!

SPAD race video

This is video from 4 yrs ago, we used to launch and mill like boat racers do, but have found the staggered 2x2 launch to be better now, just like they do in regular pylon 424 or 426 racing. But you can see the speeds they are capable of getting on. Not too bad for a cheap plane I'd say.
