I just happened to come across your thread. I haven't seen any plans, and I was wondering if you had turned any up since you posted your message?
I visited the New England Air Museum yesterday to photograph the R-3. The restored plane there is circa 1938 - 1939, after it had been purchased and modified by Marcoux-Bromberg. Head to (www.neam.org/marcoux0.htm ). There are stories about how they acquired the plane and restored it (as well as some history). I was interested to find out that Clark Gable and Spencer Tracy used that plane when they filmed a movie called "Test Pilot". Clark Gable was the Test Pilot, Spencer Tracy was the mechanic. I've been in touch with the Technical Library there. As of yesterday, the only thing that they had were some 3-Views from a book by Mendenhall called The National Air Racers in 3-Views 1929-1949. I was able to get a copy of them. I bought a similar book by Mendenhall on Amazon last night. By the way, in the 3-view that they gave me, I noticed some discrepancies. And, one of the librarians at NEAM and I are trying to figure out a discrepancy... The 3-Views (and a photo from the period) show the plane with the numeral "3" on the left wing and the fuse. But, the restored aircraft at NEAM has the numeral "2" on it. As best I can see, I have the most complete info on the R-3 right now, and it ain't much. I'm planning a 1/5-Scale plane (61" span powered by a Saito .91) in it. Note the word 'planning'. There's a lotta work that I have to do to get it anywhere near the point where I can make balsa dust. If you come across any info, history, or photos, I'd be interested in trading notes. Hope this helps, Bob |

Bob,
I know this is a very old thread but was curious how the research went with the Marcoux Bromberg. I'm researching the pilot Earl Ortman and was thinking of making an 1/8" scale of the Marcoux Bromberg. I have also been looking for plans and cant seem to track any down. Kind of surprising for such a good looking airplane. Dan |

Hi Carnifax. I never got much beyond the Research phase though the plane is still on my radar in the 'Someday' category.
You are welcome to what I have. I've been to the New England Air Museum a few times (www.neam.org) and have snapped many detailed photos. I've also got a few 3-Views but can't vouch for their accuracy. If you would like - I could blow a cd with the info for you. After all, we're 'brothers' in a way. I see that you are from Cleveland and my mom came from Wellsville, just outside of East Liverpool. I tried to ZIP the file to send it over net, but the ZIPped file was twice as large as the unzipped files. Let me know what you would like to do. Bob |

Bob,
What a generous offer. I don't know about you, but sometimes I find the research a rich and fascinating aspect of the hobby especially when you find details and information that you weren't expecting. I would sincerely appreciate any info you might be willing to share. I would be glad to spring for your time/media materials/shipping. I am giving a little speech for the Society of Air Race Historians and I am furiously compiling information on this plane. This is a fascinating airplane with an interesting background. The Keith Rider's were nice looking birds with graceful lines. I can't believe this isn't a more popular model RC-wise. I have been researching this plane and what's interesting is that there isn't too much on the net with more snippets of info in books and articles. The Cleveland Library has a great archive of press pictures especially relating to air races. I am going down to check this plane out to see if they have anything on it. I will let you know what I find. This plane is on my "someday" list too. I always thought it would be cool to have all the Thompson Trophy racers for a single year. I will shoot you a PM and we can hammer out details! Thank you Sir! |
