I fear the orange peel texture on the canopy is too bad to get a clear view out front. Think I'll omit the Canopy for FPV flights and get a second stock hatch for conventional LOS flying. |

I finally got around to replacing my broken landing gear and re-maidening this plane. Wish I'd done it sooner. I got 8 flights in, and recorded 7 of them.
As with most of my planes, I went ahead and upgraded the power. I went with the 4248 size 770kV motor from either the Staufenbiel Edge 540 or the FMS P39 Cobra 980mm, a 70A ESC from I can't remember what, a 10x7 APC sport prop, and 6s 2650-3300mah packs. At around 55A/1200w peak, it wouldn't be too crazy even if I did thrash it. I did a couple of full throttle passes today, and to be sure it will haul butt, but with this plane it's more enjoyable to me to cruise around and do a little bit of aerobatics. I was getting an easy 8 minutes out of each 2650mah pack. I did the upgrade mainly for one reason, which is CG. With the stock setup, if I put the pack on the battery tray, the CG was around 1.5"/40mm too far back. I'm still not sure if the plane would fly like that, but it seemed like too much of a risk. I had to put my 4s packs so far forward the canopy wouldn't shut. Instead of just adding weight, I thought I could use some components I had just sitting, so I went ahead. I'm sure this would still fly just fine on 4s and be even lighter weight than I have now, but hey. I still have to put the 6s packs all the way forward, so I'm not sure I gained what I thought I would with the upgrades, but it's still cool to me and I get to use packs that don't get much use otherwise. It's a win for me. Anyway, feel free to turn down the volume to avoid the awful wind noise my camera picks up, or to avoid listening to me run my mouth pretty much nonstop. The plane is pretty quiet anyway, so there's not much there to listen to. Enjoy the videos, and happy flying.

I maidened my PC-21 a few weeks ago and flubbed the landing. In the process of repairing the the damage I managed to have a significant hand-prop interface incident further delaying its return to the field. Today, I remaidened it and I was pleasantly surprised. If flies like it is on rails, the flaps work really well and it lands smoothly and easily.
I was getting about 5 minutes on 4S 3200 batteries. The only issue is a bit of lack of power, I was flying on WOT most of the time. Vertical performance is a little less than scale. I tried a spin, very nose down, perfectly scale. I have 6S capable ESC in the plane, I am starting to wonder if I should just throw in a 6S 4000 battery and give it a go with the stock prop and motor. |

I imagine 6s would be too much on the stock motor and prop but 5s is amazing. I have a bunch of flights on 5s and its a whole new plane.

Let's design a version 2 of the PC-21
I am enjoying my PC-21, I think FMS should do a refresh, here's my ideas.

I’d like more power, too. At least enough to go up and do 3 vertical rolls holding the line, like scale demo.
I think the gear length is ok, since full scale squats kinda low, too. But suspension struts would be cool! The French scheme looks sharp, but blue and white scheme sometime blend in with the sky. I like the Swiss red and white stripe version. A 6S version in 1400mm span range or bigger would be awesome! |

Mine arrives tomorrow, as a recognized Pilatus fanatic I've waited a very long time to get my hands on this beauty. Unlke some I very much care about the aesthetic and level of detail and the finish - I was tempted to repaint her in our local Air Force display team colors but in the end only a livery with the swiss cross prominent is right for her, the Swiss display team livery is striking, classy and perfectly suited to the bird so it's most likely the winner but I have to really think hard because the all black HB-HZA scheme ismenacing and purposeful and also lends itself well to the sexy Pilatus.

I hear you, for sure. The way I look at it is, if I can't see it in the air, I don't really care about it. Panel lines, pilot figures, weathering, super accurate paint matches. Stuff like the small section I had to remove from the nose to fit the new motor. Scuff marks from rough landings, repairs, etc. All that doesn't bother me if the plane flies right. I completely understand if that's your thing. I even enjoy seeing those planes that have those things done to a high level of detail. I'm more into function over form.
