Hi
The movie "From here to Eternity" used AT-6's customized a bit to look like Zeroes. If you can find this tape (and Tora! Tora! Tora!) you'll see some cleverly disguised Army Air force Trainers. I remember reading that the Zero and the AT-6 were very much alike, the Zero being a bit more powerful and nimble. Looee |

Zeros were also made of wood and cloth. No wonder a good Corsair could rip a whole squad to shreds. |

Ah yes, they were no match for the Corsair, I have a recently departed uncle who flew Corsairs, I never thought to ask him about his experiences though.... The Grumman Wildcat on the other hand... |

The latest Hollywood version of Pearl Harbor, due out shortly, is mostly digital effects, with a fair bit of full scale warbird action mixed in.
I predict you will not see many (possibly none at all) model aircraft (ones you could touch) on the screen. |

The f4u was superior in many ways, but the zero was superior to the f4u in many ways also. None of our airplanes could out maneuver a zeke. The Zeke (zero) could out turn all our stuff. That is why the saying is that you NEVER get in a turning fight with a zeke. However, Our F4u's were much faster, and could outclimb them most of the time. We would dive down and do high speed passes called Boom and Zoom, Zekes used Turn and burn. Well, thats what we call it atleast in Warbirds, that online ww2 flight sim.

I am here in Honolulu when they film this movie. I have seen plane flying over by my house for a month. It doesn't really look like the preview I saw. I remember one Zero clip a coconut tree when it came low and crash, but no one got hurt. There were no model in this movie, there must be cheaper with computer. There were lots of new house and modern building around were they film these airplane flying, but there were none in the preview, so it must have been recreate by computer. It will be showing here in Hawaii first. I will be at theater waiting in line to see it.

Lucas,
I was in Honolulu in January. I have never visited a place I enjoyed as much as your island. You are fortunate to live in paradise. |

Troy, that HAD to be the old Byron Originals Event, "Striking Back". The daily battles were the capstone to a great giant scale fly-in every summer in Ida Grove, Iowa.
I still have that video, as well. The event was sponsored by the now mostly defunct Bryon Originals company. The early ones were the best, with numerous in flight explosions of those eeeeevil A6M Zeros as they flew over the set. Indeed, a pyros dream come true. I flew there in 1987 and 1989, which was the last even before a move to the Des Moines area, where the event lost major steam. |

Been following the making of this film for over a year.As far as I know, very little was done with "Model" aircraft.Even the recreating of the Doolittle Raid was done with the real thing, and any changes needed were done in Maya or other high-end software.ILM had some to do with it, like reacreating all the Vals and Kates that don't really exist any more.Disney has pumped almost 250 Million dollars into this project.
As an aside, the trailer gave me shivers! Too cool, can't wait.Wonder what the PC Police are going to have to say! MArk |

In many war movies, WWII era AT6/SNJ trainers were used more or less convincingly to sub for Japanese Zero aircraft. According to a well-illustrated article in Air Progress, I believe, some AT6s were modified fairly extensively in order to even more closely resemble Zeros. These aircraft were used in the making of "Tora, Tora, Tora" among other movies since then. They wound up being convincing stand-ins for authentic Zeros.
I believe I am correct in stating that there are two real Zeros in flyable condition in the world: one on the West Coast of the US, the other in Japan. |
