I agree.

The only way to make any of the high wingloading jets in the pole would be as a pusher prop and who wants that.

Maybe a U2 would work out ok

Barely 12 oz of thrust at 12 volts and 13 amps???? To get a battery that would do that weighs 10.5 oz (I'm not convinced of lipo safty yet) Even with lipos - thats pathetic. I have the plane sitting on the shelf as I try to find ways to lighten it. It's rather large so the weight of 21 oz is pretty good, but the fan will not fly it. The kyosho fan or even better - the smaller wemotec fan put out WAY more thrust - even on cheap brushed motors.

Before a GWS (fighter) jet is a reality - the fans need to be more efficiant and the motors need to be redisigned or replaced.

I walk around all day with a LiPo powered mobile phone in my pocket and I am even allowed to take it onto an airliner without any restrictions. I have been using Lithium batteries in my GWS Warbirds without safety problems for 2 years now. I follow a few simple safety precautions and the LiPo batteries have prowed to be trouble free.

Now for the Nitty Gritty.

The Polyquest 3S1P 1500 mAh LiPo battery has the following specifications : -

Nominal voltage 11.1V
Capacity 1,500mAh = 13 amps for 6 minutes 54 seconds
10C = 15 Amps continuous discharge. 15C = 21.5 Amps discharge for 10 seconds.
Weight 100 grams = 3.6 oz
Dimentions 42mm*69mm*14.7mm = 1.68 in*2.76 in*0.59 in

Suddenly your 21 oz jet becomes a lightweight 14.1 oz or alternately a smaller model can be made for the 12 oz thrust motor. You decision not to use LiPo batteries is a personal one but do not use it to say that Jets powered by the GWS fans are impractical.

I love the pictures , those german birds are pretty. All we can do is wait. By the time one gets kitted by GWS the fan , motor and battery technology will be even better, until then, I will get a speed fix with a prop plane. I like the gws birds and there are enough of them to keep me busy.

First off - let me say that you are correct in everything you say. Yes lipo's are much safer than even a year ago and I have no doubts about their benifits. But about a month ago it was in the news that a girl was seriously burned when the lipo cellphone in her back pocket caught fire. They still have a ways to go for my sake, however I will make the switch eventually.

As for the fans, they are not that efficiant and if they will only work for 1/3 of the power sources out there (nicad, nimh, lipo) they aren't that attractive. Especially when GWS makes their own nimh and nicad packs. It would make sense that they have it work with their own (or similar)equipment.

When there are fans out there that can fly almost anything even with nicad - the fact you have to use lipos to fly doesn't make sense. I think lipos should enhance the preformance - not just make it. As I have said in my previous post, while the fan is not the most efficiant one out there it's not bad - the real problem lies with the motor. Maybe a more correct statement would be the motor/ fan combination is not the best. The fan is ok in some applications and, the motor is ok in some applications, but together they just don't cut it.

Check out this page on the GWS Web Site http://www.gws.com.tw/english/produc...ry/battery.htm that was updated 30 August 2004. At the bottom of this page are 2 and 3 cell GWS Lithium Polymer batteries.

I have done some preliminary figures and it looks like a profile F4 Phantom with two EDF55s or 64s hung on either side would be worth making as a proof of concept model.

I would think an F80/F84 or T33 would be an ideal choice for a jet.The wingloading on these is more than acceptable for jet like flight. An EDF55 with a 370 motor should provide more than adequate thrust while keeping the cost down due to the need of only one fan unit. And also provide the possibility of going brushless down the line if someone wants more speed without major mods. They are also extremely good looking birds in my opinion. As far as the wait for any of these suggestions,it will be a long one.But everyone has a voice, and speaking up aids in marketing research to determine what to supply the customer with.

A look at the early US navy jets brings up the McDonald Phantom 1 and simplest of all the North American Aviation Fury. This last aeroplane would be easy to a model as the full size was made using Mustang wings, tailplane and fin/rudder on a new fuselage with a jet engine. Get a GWS Slope Glider Mustang and make a new fuselage.

I would definately buy one of the more 'modern' jets
but for me it has got to be the F15 if it had to be a F-4 then a F-4 it would be....

not on the list, a U2 spy plane would make a great sloper too

thin body and long thin wings it would fly great!

not enough wing and too much body???

I would do a phantom BUT the U2 would be great, both as a epower AND warbird slope glider dark grey/black color....ooh ahh....

yeah, it is the big body that kinda makes it look smaller.

so would it get two motors or one with a twin tail pipe? I used to fly gliders in the late 60s-70s under the flight path of El Toro. we would look up and see the bottoms of those smokers just as they dropped their gear....
