Rubber Ring on Motor Nut, What is it?

Hi Everyone,

Excuse my silly question, it's the first time I've had such a large motor. The nuts that came with it have a rubber ring, on the inside, which doesn't let me screw it down, by hand, all the way to the prop. I imagine this is some sort of lock mechanism and that I just need to force it past the rubber ring using a spanner. Though, I am not 100% sure.

Is my understanding right? See the nuts in the attached picture as an example.

Thanks

Self-locking, nylock nuts by their design are more difficult to tighten than standard nuts; but they tend not to loosen up after tightening.
