Concept quad- a modular design


So, been thinking about the whole brushless/brushed quad copter thing. Brushed is so much easier and cheaper,.. but brushless is SO much better and faster and more reliable.. but pricey.. why not have a frame that you can start out rather inexpensive, use brushed quad parts, but then be able to switch the whole thing over to brushless when you get more $$ and experience in flying?


well here's my design...

will be a center core body (not on paper yet.. ) Using the carbon stick arms of the WLtoys quads, attach out to interchangeable motor mounts ... so basically when you want to change over it's a simple switch out of the mounts.. (ya, and all the electronics LOL ) keeping the arms and core body. FCB mounts will be adjustable to to accommodate different mounting hole spacing and such.

So far designed the brushed motor mount...

quick video view of the mount..

Brushed Motor mount (0 min 38 sec)


mount is designed to use gear driven system, based on the YiZhan/JJRC tarantula X6- Wltoys v262 setup..

motors from Tarantula or Wltoys v262 as well as gear driveshaft and props.
bushing or bearings will be the stock size also 3x6x2mm (though thinking of switching to 2.5mm thick as it seems more popular a bearing size)

I'd buy some!
Upgrades to the Frankenspider: stronger motor pods (looks like you're there).
Center structure that allows various fcb easy mounting.
Better battery mounting to the center frame.
With that whoo hoo!

3x6x2.5 also means that there are full ceramic bearings available, though they're cost-prohibitive.

ya... $100 bearings on a $40 quad is kinda over the top '

I know. That's one of the reasons I never bothered modifying my Dromida Ominus to use 3x6x2.5mm bearings.

How would you make the mounts compatible with both? Two different model files? Shims?

you mean flight boards? auto centering slider mounts.. sorta the same thing as the way brushless mounts work on the arms.. 4 slots.. actually working on that right now..

Sorry that I wasn't clear. I was talking about the bearing sizes.

Great work on the FCB mount.

oh,.. ya.. will have to change the mount.. tiz easy.. just push the 2 bearing stop faces in .5mm

need my new 3D printer though before I go any farther with the motor mounts cuz I want to check both liner and horizontal planes to make sure the motor gear and drive gear will line up (up/down) as well as mesh proper (side to side).. which I can't do as I had to sell my little 3d printer to have enough $$ to get the new bigger printer
