Cool

I like my Fingers! Introducing the "FAD" Update 06/14/2016

I have been trying to figure out how I am going to launch my Cuda Para-noia safely without loosing my bits and pieces... So I did some searching and found the X8 bungee launching catapult. I was able to source out the 2 inch square and the 1 inch square aluminum tubing from a local metal manufacturing business, it was leftovers from previous jobs. I got a good start on the assembly of it but I need some additional hardware... Bearings or small roller blade wheels from the shoe skates. The rail is 8 foot long and split into two 4 foot pieces with a hardwood plug to join them back together held in place by two latches. The legs are 1 inch square stock. Looking at using a old Bow that I picked up for $10 and attach it to the front and run the bungees from it to the cradle. Still lots to do so stay tuned....

Oh ya... "FAD" is short for "Foam Airplane Destroyer"

A bit more done... the carriage is almost functional. I need to get the bearings and mount them. Then I need to cut the surgical tubing and get it attached to the carabiner clips. Then on to the Trigger assembly...

Had a idea today... I mounted a old fiberglass bow to the front of the rail assembly. I was thinking that with the heavier planes it will give a bit more "Spring" to the launch and for the lighter planes I will use the eyelets at the front of the rail... What do you think?

The build is looking good so far. What would you say the total cost is right now? I'm looking to build one and may try using t slot aluminum for the rail and legs.

I have around $140.00 into it and that's with the roller skate bearings that I ordered today. I already had the surgical tubing. Looking at using a string release for bow hunting as my trigger since they have around a 200 lb rating. I am thinking of calling this rig the "FAD" short for "Foam Airplane Destroyer" We will see how it works soon I hope... Mudman1959

3 Reasons why...

Here are the 3 reasons why I decided to build this catapult launcher... All three have the same power system setups with the Cuda Para-noia doing it twice... 30000 RPM on 22 volts and putting out 1600 watts turning a 7x5 APC spinning razor...

Add a forth one to the mix... Not as powerful but just as nasty!

Received the bearings today and got the carriage and the rails drilled and the bearings assembled. Works good but I need to tie the rails together so that the bearings stay in place on the rail... Mudman1959

Well I figured out how I am going to do the trigger assembly... I was able to purchase one of these from a friend. I am using a smaller eye bolt at the back of the carriage and the release snaps on it perfectly. Planning on modifying the trigger for a line to tie to it and a foot pedal to keep away from those spinning razor blades.

Well I was able to get one launch off of the FAD before one of the arms broke... So back to the drawing board to redesign the arms and make New ones for it. They were to wobbly. Looking at running a bead down each edge of the arms to stiffen them up and I will have to remember to use the correct dies in the sheet metal break so the metal does not crack when it's bent the next time...
