I just received a WLtoys 12428 1/12 crawler from banggood.

I choose this section because imo 1/12 isn't a micro car and it can be use as off-road car.

Spiders have same diameter but 12428 have less tooth and they are slightly bigger. Same for diff. spur gear. Spiders axle are longer on 12428, i didn't measured spiders thickness but as axle is longer i think 12428 spiders thickness is slightly bigger. 12428 diff. fit in vortex gearbox.

We can bind 12428 esc with the other WLtoys radio. Throttle trim works on 12428 esc.

Mode button seems useless. No throttle trim on 12428 transmitter. Steering trim works gradually.



First though :

- Waterproofed esc.
- Almost all plastic parts are pretty soft so they will be hard to break.
- Screws are mainly M2.5, M2 for roll cage.
- Ball bearing everywhere, even sealed ball bearing on rear, good point.
- Servo isn't slow and isn't very fast just in average, seems not too bad.
- Except the rear center CVD all the others shaft are steel and seems pretty solid.
- There is on the other side of the motor some steel plates to balance the car.
- Wheels seems pretty good. Tires also, they seems to be good for a crawler and have good grip in short dry grass.
- Aesthetic design isn't too bad, i like it, even the flashy yellow/green color is fun. Except the driver who seems to have a too big head or helmet very close to dashboard ^^.
- Diff. planetaries seems very small and at first look seems to be the weak point of the car.
- Motor pinion and spur gear are 32P, but mesh is maybe a little bit too loose.
- Shock absorbers make the car bounces too much, it can be pretty fun to watch, and for the short runing test i did they seem not too bad finaly for shock without oil. It also seems than they can't be filled with oil without leak, they aren't designed to keep oil.
- battery tray can hold a 2200mah 2s lipo, zop power for exemple.
- I don't like too much how front end is built. Front hinge pin holder is screwed in front grearbox cover, itself screwed by 4 screws on the rear cover of gear box, so half of the front end is hold by this 4 screws and plastic isn't too thick at this place (see front gearbox photo above or disassembly's video).
- Spur cover will let enter dust or sand. Spur gear cover is almost same as 1/18 vortex, mainly near motor mount.
- Light is glued on body and it seems that they won't stay in place for long time, not a big deal.


For the short test i didon tarmac and short grass car handling isn't too bad. Steering radius isn't very high but not too bad also. Car is nervous, pretty fast (but not reach 50km/h as writen on the box), can almost do wheelies and brake is very strong, in grass, with full brake you can do rear totally take off and come on front. When putting full throttle on tarmac front right wheel leave the ground (like to say : helloww ^^ ), i don't know if it is because the car isn't well balanced or because of torque on rigid rear axle, i think it is torque who does that. Transmitter is quite smooth maybe not the best for a crawler but it works well. Even if transmitter look like a cheap toy it does the job like "standard" WLtoys radio. There is a mode button, from 1 to 4, i don't see any changment when pressing this button, nothing in the manual about this button.

I wait to do more tests but at this moment my impressions are pretty positive.

Left : original, right : modified. Original gear has 20 teeth, modified gear has 16 teeth. Also, diff. out drive axle goes deeper in these gears, surely to avoid it to strip in this location.

As diff. out drive axle goes deeper in these gears, if we tight them, diff. out drive is blocked. So we must remove a little bit of plastic on diff. case and diff. spur gear :

Bad news : we must also change spiders, they aren't compatible with these new gears and these spiders seems not available at banggood yet . So car is still unusable.

Can be resolved by using more long tie rod.

I done a short test (before have changed diff. gear) and it works pretty nice. It is better to put medium threadlock on grub screw.

I didn't think it would strip on this location. Every thing else is fine, all gearing teeth are ok. I think i have started to strip this part during my crawling session, i push it really hard and surely finish the job on bmx track.

Can be found on ebay. It will be too long so i will shorten it to fit it on the car.

Now i must wait for diff. gearing to be available as spare.

Anyway, this car is fun to use but must take care to don't block the wheels when pushing full throttle. It would be nice if wltoys would provide gearing upgrade made with sintered steel.

As i said, we can see that the mesh between the steel crown gear and bevel pinion isn't good : https://youtu.be/n7bEGr8fQ_Y?t=1m54s , it is same on the rear axle. I have managed to put "shims" in the front gear box and it is way better, here the result : https://youtu.be/n7bEGr8fQ_Y?t=7m32s . But on the rear, even with shims, the mesh isn't good enough, there is friction between gears which cause the gears temperature to rise at more than 50c. Anyway, i will let the steel gears and see what happen...

Otherwise the aluminum/steel center cvd is better than the one i already put.

The shock asborbers are direct fit as they are same as stock but aluminum and can be filled with oil. I will try with a thicker oil on front as the front end still bounce too much.

- 5x 8x11x0.2mm yokomo shim for a total of 1mm shim.
- 1x 5x8x0.5mm traxxas washers.
- The result is fine, far better than without any shims.

After some lipo packs use, in grass (so high traction, which add stress to transmission), with always jumps, the transmission is ok, no bad worn on the gears. The only thing is the black plastic bushing in the rear axle, those which keep in place the 5mm steel axles in the solid rear axle. As i put 1mm shim, the plastic bushing on the opposition position is more push against the step in the rear axle, so there is friction and this can melt the plastic bushing. We must reduce a little bit the plastic bushing thickness and eventually add some grease.

Other than that i'm very happy with the steel gear upgrade. I can use the car without worry about the gears. The metal rear center CVD works great also.

I still use the stock motor and electronics. Imo the car is fast enough with the stock electronics and the jumps it can do aren't ridiculous. The only upgrades i did so far are the aluminum shock absorbers, the rear center CVD and the metal gears with shims.

kinda disappointed that the final drive diffs are all plastic gears - the FE03 are all alloy gears; pinion, crown wheel and spiders.

17t pinion input so small contact area, again FE03 is 26T , this suggest higher RPM motor which then needs more reduction to get torque ???

lifting the front wheel under acceleration = soft rear spring rate, suggest that it will roll over easy in fast turns, due to the soft rate. Good for crawling, not so good for fast ripping around ?

would be interesting to see one side by side with the FE03 but not maybe the big step up everyone was expecting................

Yes, that what i thought also. But compare a soft aluminum and plastic, result can be the same. Gearing teeth seems bigger on WLtoys. i'm a bit suprise that planetaries resist to the strong brake. When i brake on short grass, front end go down quickly and rear end take off to go up in front.

It is 17T 32P so almost same size than 25T 48P. What is the ratio of Feiyue?

WLtoys is really inspired from feiyue, chassis design is almost same. But it seem that transmission is stronger on WLtoys. 32P gearing are stronger than smaller pitch. WLtoys can carry a 540 more powerful motor. Motor mount on WLtoys is more simple and seems really more strong.

I guess I f the injection moulded crown wheel gear and spiders are deeper in there gear teeth then they very well could be superior overall. I have broken a couple of front spiders doing repeatedly hard braking stops on sealed surfaces, I think the centre section that houses the spiders stretches and they graunch as the gears slip past each other........ would be interesting to see if the diff heads exchange. The diff pinion gears are steel right ?

can you do a shot of the main motor mount, I though the FS setup was pretty decent ?

The non adjustable motor position is gonna be a problem for gearing down to crawler speed
The lack of slipper is the only point I see inferior next to the feiyue.

Yes, i don't know why WLtoys stay on this position like for 1/18 vortex. It isn't complicated to put long holes, and for a crawler, like you say, can't be able to change gearing ratio isn't the best.

I didn't really do test on rock yet. I must find a good spot for that before.

Spur is really very big, i never seen a so big spur gear. 62T 32P has 50.8mm diameter. Imo only need to put a smaller motor pinion. For motor mount, as it is aluminum it isn't too hard to enlarge holes. The main issue is if there will be enough place to move the motor.

If the motor can't move a smaller pinion can only work with a larger spur. Without that the pinion won't mesh right.

Question is , does a larger spur fit in the available space? And, is the spur replaceable?

Obviously. But we can do a modification to make it move.

Imo, the more simple solution is to try to move the motor, 32P motor pinion can be find easily, not 32P spur gear with more than 62T. I already have some 32P motor pinion for my tunrigy SCT 2WD.

Need to move the motor on 2mm (maybe a very little bit less) to have good mesh with 13T. There is enough room to move motor on 2mm. Theorically a 13T will make run the car 10km/h less.

Traxxas can be a good brand to find 32P for 3.17mm shaft easily. It is easier to find 32P than the 0.7mod used in WLotys 1/18 vortex.

Equivalant spur gear diameter in 48P will be 98T.
