Build Log

MiG-23 EDF with plans

Hello everybody!
I want to share my new project. I've build MiG-23 with 70mm EDF.
Now I'm after maiden flight and painting jobs.
Of course she has moving wings, like in my Su-22.
Here are some pictures and technical data.

Made from depron and insulation foams.
Wingspan - 95cm - 130cm
Length - 130cm
EDF - 70mm, 12 blades combo for 4S from FMS - very good EDF.
Accu - Zippy 3000mAh 40C 4S
ESC - Turnigy Blueseries 70A
Weight to fly 1280g

She is painted in "Eagle Talon '97" colours, first NATO - Polish Air Force Exercises.

And the size comparison with me

Video from trimming flight, without colours yet.

I will share plans but first I have to include some changes that I made during the build.
But for now, quick explanation how wings works

Here are some pictures from the build.

White foam is a 5mm depron, grey or grey-white (one side is white) is 7mm insulation foam.
First two segments of fuselage will be from 3mm depron, they are very small.

Here is fuselage behind canopy, where will be inlet.

Wings.
Reinforcements are 6mmx6mm carbon square profile, and some balsa/plywood.

In the picture left servo is not in correct position, It should be in mirrored position to the right one. I use one channel for wing rotation, so for one servo I used servo reverser.
Wing is KFM2 type of profile, made as 7mm+3mm

Fuselage part 2.
Ok, this is first solution for inlets. I'm pasting it, maybe someone want to use it.

As you see duct for EDF is not fully round. It is "cutted" at the top by wings which will be placed on it. Duct is made from 3mm depron.

Last segments of fuselage

And fuselage with wings

On the bottom of fuselage I glued plates of depron and sanded to round shape.

Inlets - final version.
I mentioned that I had change concept.
That's why. I had figured out new design because of placement of accu.

So I made something like this

Almost completed.

Here is a concept of steering, but I changed this after maiden. It is cool to watching, but not effective in flight. I made this without upper cover of center wing section.

Maiden flight
MiG-23 EDF maiden flight (4 min 19 sec)

She was very touchy for elevator but almost unresponsive for ailerons, and CoG was to much on the back . I almost lost her in one moment, but I won, and get her safely back to the mother Earth.

Second flight when I moved CoG little forward, and with new steering concept was much much better.

another nice design Robertus!
The USAF had a few of these - they had a bad reputation for safety. they flew at Area 51 and maybe Tonopah.

and I noticed a nce looking OV-10 Bronco in the background. Can you tell us who designed that one? is that one from Marek? I didn't see it on his website.

Hi Jonquinn. Nope Bronco was designed by Slawek. He is very talented craftsman. From his hand goes MiG-29 digital I've build , F-18 Superhornet, and F-16 EPP for example. He cooperates with Marek as well.
Bronco is build from scratch, without any plans, just by cutting depron at hot and covered by paper. He maiden her and gave me. I re-equipped her an maidened again with new, strongest, setup. It's very nice flyer. Wingspan is 130cm. Funny thing, she is almost 7 years old. Its a lot of time for depron model.

Plans??

Hi Robertus,
good job!
It will be a building plan?
You should plan accordingly built SU-22 and flown super.
Unfortunately, faulty servo caused the crash.

Here's a few photos from the times of greatest glory
