Contest Director's Letter

Greetings Soaring Enthusiast!

As many of you know, our long time and beloved soaring friend Adam Quennoz passed away earlier this year from complications from a motorcycle accident last fall. We would like to honor his memory by inviting you to the 1st Annual Adam Quennoz Memorial Gateway Soaring Open, to be held Friday (F3K), Saturday (UNL), and Sunday (UNL), June 3rd, 4th, and 5th.

Itís that time of year again when the promise of warm weather and green grass signal the arrival of the sailplane contest season. This yearís 1st Annual Adam Quennoz Memorial contest will be for Unlimited Class sailplanes and will consist of both Expert and Sportsman categories.

We will fly a man-on man format with 5 to 7 man flight groups. Saturday and Sunday are AMA sanctioned as separate contests to assist those needing points for their LSF qualifications. There will be trophies thru 3rd place in Expert and first place Sportsman as well as an Overall Weekend Champion Trophy based on the combined scores from both Saturday and Sunday.

We will get as many rounds in as possible with Task T-1 International Duration as listed in the AMA Rule Book. The landing task will be L-4 Spot Landing as per the AMA Rule Book.

Saturday and Sundayís contestantís meeting will start at 9:00am. Registration will open around 8:00am for the early birds. Round #1 will commence at 9:30am. Lunch will be provided as part of the entry fee for all contestants. Any additional meals can be purchased early the morning of the contest day and prior to when we place the order. There are also a number of fast food joints within just a few minutes of the field as well.

For the early arrivals, we will also be holding a low key F3K club contest on Friday with registration at 9:00am and flying to begin at 9:30am. There is no entry fee for the F3K event and the winner will be entitled to copious bragging rights.

On behalf of the Mississippi Valley Soaring Association, we look forward to your flying with us and we wish you safe travel to the contest. If we can be of help in anyway, please donít hesitate to contact us. Our clubís mission is to host a contest you will come back to again!

Guys,

Just a reminder that the Gateway is coming up in two weeks from now. We are pumped to get to see you all again.

Here is just a little reminder as to how green our grass is. This was taken at our club contest just this Saturday.

I look forward to seeing you all there,

Guys, after you enjoy your holiday, eat all the food, and drink all your beer, remember the good times we've had and how much fun we'll all have again next week.

Hello AQM-GSO fliers,

The time has come for flying! Gentlemen, man your planes!

F3K flying begins Friday morning.

We plan to pit at the intersection of A/B/F/G and fly on Field A.
Registration/Pilots Mtg at 9:00am
Flying starts at 9:30am.

Early arrivals/practice flying

If you arrive during the day and want to practice fly you can go to the very north end of Field E as long as it is not wet. If in doubt, ask an MVSA member first before flying.

See you there,

Plans for Saturday Unlimited Contest

Wind is expected to be SSW 5-9mph. There are scattered thunderstorms in the forecast. Hope they miss us.

HQ will be at the intersection of A/B/F/G.

Flying will be on Field A. Winch lines will be parallel to the access road. We may have a bit of a crosswind but that can't be helped as Field B is too wet to use.

Parking and pits will be along the edge of Field G which is stripped. Parking will be on the dirt. Suggest you back in so you are pointed towards the gravel access in case rain forces a hasty exit.

See you all there Saturday,

AQMGSO - HL Friday results

Hi Fliers,

Five fliers went out today and warmed up our thermal skills by flying some F3K. We flew 8 rounds under high smooth overcast and light East breezes.

It was a really good day to get your plane tuned up and for catching a sunburn if you forgot your sunblock. (maybe they should call it a cloudburn. )

The final totals after drops was:

1) Chris Lee 7000
2) Wayne Wimbish 6340
3) Robert Samuels 6066
4) Bill Coalson 4639
5) Tom Scully 3434

Thanks to all who came out and had a fun day.

Saturday weather expectations:

We have a low pressure system down in Texas sending moisture our way and at the same time have a weak cold front squeezing in from the NW.

Not expecting much more than an occasional light shower (drizzle) overnight but when the front comes through tomorrow we could get some scattered stronger stuff.

Hopefully we will get missed. It is possible however that we might have to delay the start, or take a pause while the front passes.

By noon it is expected that it will be over and the afternoon should really be ok.

I plan to be at the field between 7 and 7:30. I'll post a note here at 7:30 one way or the other as to whether there will be any delay.

Check back then before you head to the field.

Thanks,

Calling a minimum 2 hour rain delay.

Plan for now is to start around 11:30am depending on what the front to our West decides to do.

Right now it looks like it is weakening. Will see if it re-fires and requires further delay.

I am still thinking that we can fly this afternoon at the least.

Stay tuned.

Hey Guys,

Thank you all so much for coming out and making this such a memorable weekend. Had a blast flying F3K on Friday and then UNL on Saturday and Sunday.

Thanks to everyone who helped and to all who flew. Your great sportsmanship and helpfulness made the contest go very smoothly.

I'll try and add some more thoughts tomorrow. Attached are the results and blow by blow for Saturday and Sunday's festivities.

I hope you all had a very safe trip home and that we can all get together to fly again soon.

Blessings,
Wayne Wimbish
