Battery Tray
Not the best pictures for you Gary. The biggest immediate challenge I see is the stock bottom of the tray doesn't appear to screw in and out. Here's hoping you can come up with something.

The stock Eflite battery will slide several inches back into the cabin area, so no issues there. Note that the stock tray fits into a 3/8" to 1/2" recession in the form before the battery area widens out. I'm guessing your base could fit in there with the tray attaching at just that "height." Length and width of the tray will have to be very precise to allow it to fit back into the recesses of the cabin.

Thrust??
Tl;dr, would someone please thrust test the motor because all this stuff below is not rock solid data:
As I wait for the truck, a day early, I'm curious what the E-flite Power 10 1100kv with the 12x4 prop can pump out while stationary (static thrust). The plane's flying weight is 50.3 oz / 1400g / 3.13 lb (a bit heavier than the Apprentice, but with the Apprentice's prop of 11x8, higher pitch, less static thrust). As I can't find tested thrust data on this E-flite Power 10 motor, the closest motor match in terms of weight (4.23 oz versus 4.3 oz of E-flite), RPM/v (1100kv each), recommended burst watts (450 according to HeadsUpRC's tests) is the Emax 2815/07 1100kv. Emax's page claims that with a 3S and an 11x5.5 prop, spinning at 9400 rpm and burning 36A, it will push 1800g / 4 lb / 64 oz -- pretty flattering and hard to believe. With a 2S and a 13x6.5 prop at 30A, 1330g / 2.93 lb / 47 oz. I don't know if that data is from actual testing or from calculations and estimates. There's no regulatory body that I know of enforcing prop/motor testing standards. On HeadsUp's actual tests, and I trust, along with what I've gathered from this forum, is that they are trustworthy, although with a smaller prop but of slightly greater pitch, 10x7E, it pushed at 37 amps 1560g / 3.4 lb / 55 oz. So, 1560g is 11% more thrust than the plane weighs, and Emax's claim of 1800g is 29% more thrust to weight. Therefore, I am optimistic on some decent vertical performance and not needing to hotrod it. And by the way, if you manage to burn out your stock motor or like having a spare on hand, instead of $60 from E-flite you could grab this GT2815/07 1100kv from HUH for $27. As for 2S 2200mAh batteries, which tend to weigh around 130g, you'd only save about 40g from the E-flite 3S 2200mAh 30C and you'd lose something like a third of your RPMs, and Emax's data suggests that 30A from a 11.1V would deliver 32% more RPMs than a 7.4V battery. This one from CommonSenseRC, 2700mAh 35C, weighs just 17g more than the E-flite which buys you close to 25% more capacity. I ordered that, along with two of these 2200s from HUH which are lighter and cheaper than the E-flite, which I also ordered. If I don't need them, I'll run them in series or parallel in the Apprentice. Nice!! Here's the truck! Timber and batteries! But should I maiden her with the stock prop or my MasterAirscrew 12x4? Timber vs Carbon Z and Parkzone Sport CubsQuote:
Have only flown the Timber once as it arrived FedEx yesterday afternoon. I bought it and intend to fly it as a STOL aircraft primarily, although will experiment with inverted flight and aerobatics because you can. On its maiden flight it did not disappoint: Ridiculously easy to fly out of and stay in tight areas with full flaps. Never put in less than 50% flaps given field and neighborhood constraints. Safe Mode makes it crazy easy to control and get comfortable. Flipping Safe off gives you the controllability necessary for more sporting maneuvers. More advanced RC pilots than I can speak to that. Bottom line: the Timber offers everything I liked about the Carbon Z and Parkzone Super Cub with better STOL and controllability while building confidence and getting trim adjusted on first flights. And there is no comparison if you are in a tight field--the Timber will fly where the other two will not. The landing gear suspension on the Timber is vastly superior to the other two planes. Note: the Parkzone would fit into my Honda Fit with the wing attached. The Timber will not (longer wingspan), but that doesn't matter as it is so easy to take the two halves of the wing on and off. |

the typical eflite tray i think we could use some pem nuts or cinch nuts after u drill the oem tray holder when i get mine i take the tray out and send some measurements. Looks as if the tray snaps into a plastic frame that was molded into the fuse ?? Mine will be here tomorrow provided the little usps truck can make it the final 10 miles fed ex drove past one of their own distrubution centers 5 miles from me and then 5 miles past me to the local post office a town over only to have to move it to another post to deliver it ?? logistics YEA OK ?? |

I am currently experimenting with bigger motors. I'm actually at the airport working on it right now, so I'll post some numbers later. Here is some pictures of the motor compartment with some measurements.

Hey DBM16,
Where in Dallas are you located? I'm super excited to get mine after hearing your comparisons of two of my favorite foamies in the CZCub and PKZ Sport Cub. Smartpost is driving me a little insane though like many of you haha. It's been sitting in Dallas for a couple of days now. Finally transferred to USPS but who knows how long that will take now. Should be here Friday at the latest. |
