Build Log

1:20 RHS 70 Shearwater Hydrofoil scratch build

Finally starting my hydrofoil build. I have been wanting to do one for years but kept getting side tracked. I decided on the RHS 70 because of it's simple, non stepped hull, single shaft arrangement and surface piercing foils. I just pulled the master from the plaster molds and everything came out great.
Here are the specs for now:

1:20
43" long
9" hull beam
single outrunner
2" 3 blade prop
twin rudders
polyester hull
Sintra deck and cabin

Looking forward to seeing how this is done. I have a 32nd parallel German WW II hydrofoil kit. It does not have the running hardware but it uses the same type of foil. I would like to one day have it running.

Plaster mold? So simple, of course!

Any special kind of plaster? I guess I'd be worried about the surface strength... but patching and even new molds should be a cinch!

Ever try a split mold (L/R) in plaster?

Watched the video tutorial and it was very interesting. Are you using gel coat as a base for the cloth and resin? From the top the hull kinda has a pt boat shape. Looks great.

I actually found the 3D cad of the boat you sent me years ago.
Any thoughts on the foils?

The only thing on the Ultra Cal it's so darn heavy.
Steve does not call it stone for nothing. Dave

Actually I take back the CAD comment. It was a different hydrofoil. Ha!

Ultracal is heavy but very cost effective and fun to work with. As for the foils, A combination of sheet brass and urethane foils that key into the brass. We need some adjustment so I plan to make everything removable with hardware.

You know I am nuts about all things hydrofoil.
My second love after subs.

Yours looks similar to my PT50.
I like the twin rudders better though.
My ultimate build would be to do a water jet foil.

Check out this bad boy!
Tested by the Canadians in the late 60's.
It hit 63 knots.
