Bi-planes & Hi-wing tail draggers - can't take off and land straight.

I have a SIG 1/6 J3 Piper cub. Always have trouble taking off straight. It always veers to the left. Same with landing. I usually fly mid wings or low wings (warbird) and never had this kind of problem.

Saw another one flying a bi-plane (Waco). Same problem. But his plane is much smaller.

I'm just worried because our runway is a two lane street but with sidewalks on each side.

On take-off---P-factor from the propellor.
Compensate with right rudder.
Even a full scale Cessna on take-off has a bootfull of right rudder in it.
Don't know about your landing problem tho. The road might have a crown in it or you have a wheel binding on the axle.
Always have to fly a taildragger all the way to the ramp.
Should learn to use the rudder all the time anyway to coordinate the turns, and for aerobatics.

Heading left on take-off is a natural tendency of most airplanes. But heading left on landing is not. Check your wheel alignments. Does your plane roll straight with engine off and controls at neutral? If not, check your tail wheel alignment or for a binding main left wheel. The latter can be avoided by using wheel collars on both sides of each wheel. If that's not the problem, check the alignment of the main wheels and use a couple of degrees of toe-in with them. Engine torque on take-off wants to make the left wheel more effective and that helps counteract that effect.
