Yippee!
IFO owners thread #1
Hello, my name is Jim & I'm a recent IFO-aholic...
I am starting this thread as doing searches of IFO's leads to great ideas but not one continuous thread... (or if I'm wrong, please point me to the master thread...) I see there are other SlowStick & Unicorn threads so here's an attempt at starting an IFO (MK3/Mini/Trainer/Wild) one. Please post your IFO pics & build & flight experiences & questions here... |

I am the proud owner of a Mini-IFO with the following mods...
-LensRC CDRom Motor 15T -860 ThunderPower Battery -Single front wheel system borrowed from Boomer -Castle Creations 10A Brushless Speed Control -.080 rod for the body so the rudder doesn't jiggle when going fast -Direct control rods for the elevons instead of pull-pull I bought it to cure the many times windy or Minnesota winter blues so I can fly indoors in a gym... & boy is it fun & manueverable in that sized area! Touch-n-goes, or "roll on the floor forever & pull up at the last second", & landings are great! |

Jim,
Cool planes and cool vids! I sure wish we had indoor space here but at least weather isn't as bad as yours! Was Asst City Engineer for South Saint Paul, Aitkin County and Engineer for consulting firm in Olivia after graduation. So I remember the winters! boomer www.boomerseflight.com |

The first video on this page is the only one I have of my Mini. http://www.rcsites.net/fwilly/video.html
I never got any of it with the cdrom. Shortly after I put it on, I snapped the main bow, and after I repaired it, it never flew right again. I need to rebuild it. |

I'm glad to hear it's a moving rudder!! I was a bit concerned that you had a REALLY floppy rudder on takeoff! ;-) How is the rudder on the mini? I've considered putting it on mine, but afraid to add the additional weight...Does it give enough to make it worth it? (I guess I'd assume so, being it's a prettty large rudder)

I liked it with a rudder. It was very hard to hover, but there were other things that a rudder made possible. It could do climbing inverted flat spins really well. Harriers were easier with a rudder.
What it really needs along with a rudder is just a little side area. That would make it easier to hover. I plan on adding a little bit of side area when I rebuild mine. I was thinking I could build it with two center rods spaced the diameter of the carbon rod appart, and use the space in between to fit a removable covered circle of carbon. I figure the best place for it is somewhere around the CG. |

Hey Boomer, I really like your LG mount! Question, where it is attached to the main boom, how is it done? Looks like a piece of tubing. Is it slotted and glued to the boom? The wheel mount looks like tubing or Shrink tube on the outside of the brace, which is it. Did you do the same on your T-IFO or did the stock gear with larger wheels work OK? Thanks for the great mod!

I just thread-wrapped the angled piece directly to the body on mine & did the forked front-end like Boomers... Also created the forked piece but used the origional wheel by drilling it out & just drag the elevons on landing since my indoor site is short carpet...
But.... I do notice a flight characteristic difference from mine (with front wheel contraption) & my sons (no wheel, just catch landings) Mine seems more inherently stable with the front wheel modification. (could be taken as a positive or negative) Large true loops are way easy but I notice on inverted flight it now has more of a tendancy to want to right itself than my sons. For me these are positives as I was thinking I wanted to use exponential on the transmitter to make it a little less sensitive overall, but the wheel mechanism has solved that & given me the ability to do great indoor touch-n-goes. Boomer, do you notice the same thing? |
