BlueJayF4 - STM32F4 based FC


BlueJayF4 is shipping now at the following retailers:

The rev4 is released, and includes only minor cosmetic changes from the rev3, but does move to using the ICM-20602 gyro (soft mounting still recommended).


The BlueJayF4 is now available from BattRC in wholesale quantities. Please place your orders directly with them. They are also present on Alibaba. These are not clones, and are legitimate.

The BlueJayF4 is a cheerful STM32F405 based Flight Controller.

Why a new controller? There was no simple F4 based board out there at the time to replace my F1s. This is the FC designed for those wanting F4 performance but maintaining the F1/3 simplicity - i.e. it comes with non of the extra trimmings - it's bare bones - it's acro you might say .

Keeping it as simple as the basic F1/3 boards to just get out and fly was the intention.

Features / Specification
  • Runs Betaflight & iNAV (note there is currently no support in Raceflight)
  • 3s-6s Lipo battery input - using a piggy backed POLOLU (500ma or 1a)
  • Buzzer output
  • Voltage Sensor (off battery input)
  • Has outputs for up to 6 ESCs
  • Serial or PPM input (does not support individual PWM channel input)
  • MicroSD Card support for BlackBox
  • Three available hardware UART ports
  • Built in inverter for SBUS input (UART6)
  • Tactile button for booting to STM boot loader
  • Standard pin headers for the majority of connections
  • SWD via JST (on the base of the board - connector not fitted)
  • i2c available via through hole micro pin header
  • AD via through hole micro pin header for sensor e.g. current
  • STM32F405 32-bit processor at 168MHz, 1Mb flash, 192kb ram
  • ICM-20602 MPU connected via SPI (Rev1 and 2 used 9250, and rev 3 used ICM-20608-G all still connected via SPI)
  • MS5611 Barometer (optional extra on bottom of board - can be fitted by oneself)
  • Micro USB connectivity using STM Virtual Communications Port
  • 36mm x 36mm (standard 30.5mm square mounting holes - to centre of hole)

If you are having boot issues on Rev2, please remove the pull up resistor on the NRST line (as per image). This may solve your issue.

Only try this if you have a fine tip soldering iron (and a fine hand) or tweezers and hot air rework station.

Depending on the power supply (your BEC, batteries or such) the voltage rail is coming up slower than the reset timing (the cap charging) and the MCU comes out of reset too early.

This pull up will not be present in Rev3.

The pads represent (from top to bottom):
- 3v3,

Essentially pin for pin for the ST-Link pins on STM32Fx discovery boards.

Very cool.

I don't think the baro is going to be used by very many people. You could always make an acro and full version if there's a demand for it.

Interesting board - if you can get it stateside sub $50, it could be a viable contender in what's getting to be a rather crowded playing field...
