Traxxas Spartan owners thread

Edit** This thread started with a question about batteries for a Spartan, but turned into the go-to thread for all things Traxxas Spartan related. There have been some random threads created around RCG about the boat and I tried to include them here.

Some are more related to the Spartan than others, but they all talk about the boat somehow.

Original post** Hey guys I just bought a used traxxas Spartan online and I need a battery for it. I have a Turnigy 5000 mah 25-35C 3s already and I want a 2s to go with it for 5s runs (not ready for 6s yet)

What battery should I get? I've heard that its best to stay with the same brand battery and the same capacity/C rating?? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated! Thanks

Welcome to the club, the Spartans a very fun boat.

The Spartan likes heavy batteries. These 60c heavy duty Turnigy packs weigh 160g more each battery. They make it very easy to balance the boat and they run extremely cool.

I'm sorry I kind of skimmed through your original post, I guess I got excited hearing there's a new Spartan owner to talk to.You definetly need the matching 2s pack if you want to run on 5s.The link I posted was something you would need to buy as a matching pair.

There really isn't a thread since the boats popular enough to have its own section on the Traxxas Forum and Offshore Electrics.Feel free to keep asking questions here though.

No man its ok! I am super excited about the new boat! I think I will get those batteries when I'm ready for 6s power

I'm sure I will have questions about the boat so maybe this thread can turn into the rcgroups Spartan thread

I appreciate the help a lot though! Is there anything I should know about the boat before I start using it???

Just make sure its properly maintained and you won't have any problems starting off with the stock plastic prop.

The flex shaft augers grease out of the tube during a run, use alot of grease on the flex shaft and expect to see a little water inside after running it a full charge.Oil the motor bearings as well.

I like your idea about keeping this thread active, just ask questions as you can think of them.I'm subscribed now and I'm sure others will join in.

Corrosion x the receiver. The water "proof" box is more like highly water resistant. Eventually some moisture will find its way inside and wet the rx.

Ok awesome guys! This might be a silly question but what's the best way to grease the flexshaft? On my Barbwire I pull out the flexshaft, dry it off, dip the end into my jar of grim racer speed grease, then just slide it back in the boat. I'm thinking this isn't the best way to do the Spartan...or maybe it is? Any advice from you Spartan owners? Also how do I oil the motor? I didn't know that was needed and I've never done it on my Barbwire lol.

Where is the best place to get/order some Corrosion X??

I got my Corrosion X from Kintec, I use the 4oz bottle and its lasting a very long time.Just remove the rx and completely soak it in corrosion x.You can do that to all of your rx's, even your trucks.

It removes rust good to, if you see light rust on the flex shaft clean it with the CX.

I just use Remoil to lube my motors, Walmart has it in the gun/fishing section. It dries out fast so I need to use it often, but its a cleaner, lube and corrosion repellent all in one.Just spray enough to lube the bearing, you don't need much.

The flex shafts blue stinger has a little hole in the side.Proboat/Dynamite makes a little grease gun that fits in the little hole, you can fill the stinger full of grease with it.

I use the grease gun to grease the stinger and I also use Grimracers grease on the flex shaft like you described.

Ok thanks for the info and links Micromodder. Do I need to have the servo and esc cords plugged into the Rx before I spray it or just cover the opening with some tape or something? How do you get the CX off?

And I'll get some of the lube. What part of the motor do I use it on? Just spray in on the whole thing? I think that's the problem with my Barbwire motor. Never lubed it before and it seems to be sticking a little.

Also what's a stinger? Is it something on the Spartan?

You'll need to remove the Rx from the boat.It has little slots on the side of its plastic casing, press on them with a small screwdriver or knife blade and you can open it up.After its open you'll be able to remove the rx, you basically want to bath the entire thing in corrosion x.

You only spray oil on the motors bearings.
