San Diego Model Yacht Pond for RC Boats

I'd like to post an unofficial thread for the San Diego Model Yacht Pond (aka the Model Boat Pond). We can continue to develop this thread over time, and the goal will be to have a magnet thread for events, photos, and discussion related to the San Diego Model Boat Pond. Yup, I've seen other groups around the country do this well, and I'm going to copy their great idea.

LOCATION:

For those new to the Pond, it's in San Diego on Vacation Island.

POND USAGE:

Scale Boats:
Saturdays 9:00am-noon

Sail Boats:
Saturdays noon-3:00ish

Power Boats:
Fridays & Sundays

The exception to this is when the city or a local club has an event that utilizes the pond or the park around the pond.

LOCAL GROUPS:

The main organized group to use the Model Yacht Pond is the San Diego Argonauts which has Scale, Sail & Power divisions.

The 1:96 scale group Task Force 96 / The 8th Fleet typically runs with the Scale Boat Division on Saturday mornings. They also run twice annually at Santee Lakes.

CALENDAR & EVENTS:

Unfortunately, I do not believe the city does not maintain a calendar for the pond. Instead, the Argonauts calendar is a good starting point:

FACEBOOK & SOCIAL MEDIA:

Facebook public page for upcoming Argonauts events:

Facebook discussion group:

...

Feel free to post below with new or old photos, videos, and other info about the San Diego Model Yacht Pond. Happy RC boating!

It's somewhat of a mix; it does go in/out with the tide a little.

Thanks for noting that Lee. That rinse station was a big hit!

Yup, the pond is salt water. We use it every week for RC boating and are sure to rinse everything well with fresh water. Most guys bring a spray bottle or use the drinking fountains for a quick rinse.

Best part about the saltwater pond is that it gets fresh water with every incoming tide. Since San Diego is desert, most of our local waterways are pretty gross compared to the Model Boat Pond. Plus, it's an awesome place to spot saltwater wildlife. Anything that can swim up the tube from the Mission Bay can make it in, and guys have spotted everything from stingrays to baby sharks.

Last month we had our 2015 mini Parade of Lights. It was a beautiful night run. One of our members Jarod made this video.
