Maachi Veltro PSS flies again. Added a video from an earlier big air day.

The Maachi Veltro is my first PSS warbird sloper effort. Just finished a complete repair job on it as late last summer, doing a stupid maneuver, I found one of the boulders embedded in my slope. WHACK! off came the wings and horizontal tail, mangled the torque rods, accordioned the fuse, snapped some servo horns and tray and it sat on the hangar floor collecting dust for months.

Missed flying it so I repaired it in December and re-maidened it Saturday. The wind was cycling down so I only got two flights but it did not disappoint. I need tweak the CG just a tiny bit but otherwise bring on the wind.

Well that seems to fly OK Steve. The repairs did not hurt the performance :-)
How cold was it and how do you keep your hands warm?

Hey Maarten, I have some Mountain HardwareŽ winter gloves with long cuffs and good velcro tabs. They're weird in that they are VERY thin and maybe 3 layers ( at least 2 ) with a windproof outer shell. And they're baggy to boot. I don't know how they do it but my hands stay warm and being thin I can feel the TX sticks well.

Then I have on street clothes under another layer, down jacket under a shell, snow boots, balaclava hat. So ya...I'm wind proof and warm.

The temps were in the high 30's F with wind chill of high 20's F.

Not so bad. I've flown last month in a 13F windchill or -10C for you. Face got numb...smile froze.

If there is a decent south wind I will be flying as long as I can get up the slope and down the snow covered path to the parking lot.

NOW....how this guy stayed warm was beyond me. A PG'er was just landing when I parked my van and he had an entourage filming him.

I thought what guy wears a pink leotard to fly in?....uuhhh....no leotard.....just boxers......harness and PINK skin.....

Steve can you make a picture of your gloves? This brand makes some nice stuff.
I could do with the kind of gloves you described. Better than a transmitter cover. I once launched a plane but could not get my hand back in . yikes.

I will leave my pink leotard at home then :-)

Maarten, I will do that. Mine are 5 years old and this model is replaced. At the time they were $125 USD. I don't see the same model online now. Pictures later tonight or tomorrow.

If you're left-handed and fly mode 2, a transmitter mitt is no problem, Maarten!

And nice job bringing the Veltro back to life, Steve!

Thanks Steve! Now I know what to look for.

A Dave: righthander and mode 1.
I lanch with the right hand. That means no aileron control untill I get my hand back in the transmitter mitt. That can be dicey..

I figured. There are so few things in this world where it's an advantage to be left-handed, I just had to rub it in.

Looks good to me.
You've got to be keen to fly on a snowy & windy day. I get miserable on the 2 or 3 days it gets below 10c.

Don't move to my neck of the woods then. Or Steve's

You'd get right miserable.

This is way OT but here you can see how much fun we have in the winter over here flying vintage stuff

You can get spoiled by the forgiving landings.

Maarten - nice video. No OT worries.

Dave, the poofy snow does make for soft landings. I had sliding ice and frozen gravel landings several times and my P2K came in hot from behind the the rotor and its inertia kept it sliding right past me off the lip. Well you can guess what happened. Wind caught under one wing and flipped it. Snapped the vert off. CA and kicker added - right back up.

Back when it was brand new, just off the build table, third flight, almost a year ago on a BIG AIR day....where is everybody?

Had the flight park to myself...again.

Looking forward to the spring winds.
