Soft Landing

I have been told by Jim Hanson, the CD for our upcoming contest that they are putting down some sod in the landing area. That is good news for those of you with still pretty airplanes!

Reminder

Just a reminder that our next contest is coming up next Sunday, April 17th. It's not too late to jump in and start racking up those points for the year end championship. SC2 has two throw outs for the season, so if you missed the first two contests it won't hurt you too badly!

Mixed Launch LSF Points

This is to those of us doing the LSF. The LSF board has approved the inclusion of mixed launch contests in both the SAP and eSAP. SC2 went to a mixed launch format this year, and to the best of my knowledge all of our contests have conformed to the guidelines set down by the LSF board. As most of our pilots have already seen our scoring program already calculates and reports the LSF points for individual contests based on these guidelines as well. Here is a copy of the correspondence I received last week.

Tom

SC2 - Be there and be Squared!

Background

In the past few years a new contest format has arisen that has allowed winch launched and motor in the nose launched planes to compete on a level playing field, at least in the eyes of contest organizers and competitors. That format is called Mixed Launch Thermal Duration.

As Mixed Launch TD has grown in popularity, those enjoying the format brought it to the attention of the LSF board. The President of the LSF, Larry Jolly, asked a council of V's to study this proposal and advise us regarding the merits of the proposal. A detailed set of recommendations regarding contest format rules was put forward for a vote by the board for inclusion as an allowable contest format for the traditional Soaring Accomplishments Program. This vote took place on March 30, 2016 and result was unanimous approval by the Board of the LSF that contest results in Mixed Launch TD formats are acceptable for SAP and eSAP.

Mixed Launch Thermal Duration Requirements for SAP or eSAP Acceptance

The LSF will recognize Mixed Launch TD contests for consideration for SAP or eSAP requirements based on the following.

1. The Aspirant must complete all rounds with a fully compliant winch launched Sailplane that meets all SAP requirements (or a fully compliant electric launched sailplane for the eSAP).

2. The contest must meet the requirements for an Extended Thermal Duration contest as outlined in the SAP.

3. The scored gliding portion of the flight commences at the conclusion of any launch method employed. Meaning that electric launched models will not have their motor runs count as part of the scored flight. ALES type contests where the clock is started with the plane leaving the hand will not qualify.

4. All contestants must fly the same tasks. Winch and Electric launched gliders will have the same target time and landing task in each round.

5. To the best of his ability the Contest Director will ensure that launch heights are as equal as possible. Launching will be in the direction of the turnarounds. The object is that at the conclusion of launch, all gliders are in the same part of the sky, at the same altitude. Under No circumstance is launching to become part of the contest strategy.

6. The Competitors final placing will be based solely on the combination of his duration and landing scores normalized with his fellow competitors.

7. The contest will be listed as a Mixed Launch TD contest on the Aspirant's voucher.

Sincerely,

Larry Jolly, President
Peter Goldsmith, Vice President
Jim McCarthy, Treasurer
Skye Malcolm, Secretary

Contest 3 Results.

Well, another challenging contest! The wind was apparently blowing like mad everywhere but Fish Canyon. We had light winds and heavy sink. For those who think SC2 contests are a walk in the park, only our winner Keith Kindrick, made his times within a couple of seconds. Congratulation Keith! Our second place pilot, Gary Filice, was off by a couple of seconds more... everyone else... I let the results speak for themselves!

Thanks to SWSA for hosting another great contest, and to all their members who helped it all run smoothly.

The SWSA club had some issues with their winches at the last competition held there. They wanted to have 3 rounds to make sure everything was OK and the competition went well.

SC2 Contest #4, 2016

Our 4th contest is coming up May 15th, 2016, at the Victor Valley RC Park in Hesperia. If you have been wanting to fly our series for the first time, this is a great place to do it. Pretty wide open with a large landing area. It can get cold, especially first thing in the morning so bring a jacket!

For the usual suspects, the race for the championship is still wide open. Remember, every point counts!

Contest 4 Results.

Here are the results for our 4th contest at the VVRC field in Hesperia. We had a smaller number of pilots but to be honest I wasn't surprised. The winds were forecast to be 20+ MPH! As it turned out the winds were pretty normal for that field. It would be gusty to about 12 then dead calm when a thermal would move through.

As you can see from the scores it was another challenging contest. Only Mike Lee made his times all 4 rounds, and the first round he was scratching out 5 minutes along side me after we found the sink together. Congratulations Mike!

Also condolences to Rick Schwemmer, who had a bad crash when the wind flipped his Xplorer over right at launch and it piled into the ground. It sounds fixable but if anyone has a spare newer Xplorer fuse you might reach out to him, I'm sure he would appreciate it!

Aero-Squared!

Here is another idea I have been kicking around. A two day event, called "Aero-Squared" Aero towing on Saturday all day. An SC2 competition on Sunday at our normal time, usually ending around 12:30, then aero towing the rest of Sunday.

There are a number of pilots who I'm sure fly both disiplines. For those that don't it would be interesting to see how the other half lives . I attended my first aerotow event not long ago and it was very interesting to say the least.

Thoughts?

Contest #5 2016

Our next contest is coming up on June 19, 2016. Unfortunately if falls on Fathers Day. Such is the problem with trying to schedule our events around all the other things that are going on, both with our flying lives and our real lives. Hopefully our Dads in the group can make it!

We are back at Fairfield Park in Costa Mesa. For those of us that didn't do well there the first time, look at that as practice for this one

We are coming up on our first throw out. For those pilots that think they aren't doing so well in the year end Championship race, that might shake things up some.

See all of you there!

HSS Directions

For those of you who haven't been to the Fairview Park flying site, it can be tricky to find. The last contest I spent 10 minutes driving around in vain looking for Canyon Drive, the entrance closest to the field. So here is an address that will get you to the right spot...

2350 Canyon Dr.
Costa Mesa CA 92627
United States

This is the Waldorf School which is across the street from the parking lot next to the entrance. No excuses now for getting lost
