I found a couple old threads on converting a u can do .46 but most use nimh and a gearbox. has anyone converted one with an outrunner and a 6s battery? I have a 3000mah and 5000mah 6s id like to use. I have an unused u can do hanging in my garage. My concern is where to put the battery? I'm worried about putting it under the canopy because of it being tail heavy. I thought about putting it in at an angle towards the firewall but don't think it would fly so good with the battery mounted unlevel. any suggestions or experience with this conversion?

This is not a 6s setup, but it will fly the plane very well. Run an APC 13x5-13x6

I have a 4130 cobra motor 540kv I am going to use with either a talon 90 or Hitec 80 amp esc. I was looking for anyone that has done an electric conversion on this plane to see what they did for battery placement and how it balanced.

I converted my UCD-46 to electric power, using an Eflite BL-50 motor and 60 amp ESC taken from a Carbon Z cub. I made the battery access under the canopy by removing the decking and mounting the battery on a plywood tray that slid into the area where the fuel tank was. The battery tray rested on a piece of ply that was glued across a former. The tray was held down in the front with two small pieces of ply glued to the same former as the tray rest, just high enough for the tray to slide under. The tray was held down in the rear with an 8-32 nylon thumb screw that screwed into a blind nut (T-nut) mounted on a piece of ply glued across the fuse just above the wing cutout. I painted the inside of the canopy silver to hide the battery access, and held the canopy down with 4 socket head servo screws.

I had to buy Zippy 6S compact batteries because they were the only ones I found to fit. The plane balanced in the range recommended, and it flew very well.

Sorry for all the words and no pix, but I landed a bit short and ripped off the landing gear and cracked the fuse at its thinnest part - above the wing and below the canopy. UCDs are notorious for this weak spot and weak landing gear mount. Needless to say the plane and your user name have much in common.

look at https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=213549, posts 7, 8, & 9. Regardless of battery types shown - you can use any lipo that will fit - that's sorta what I did, but my battery tray wasn't permanent, and I could move the battery on the tray to change the balance.

I think the rpms will be too low with 5S, this is actually a 6S setup
To the OP, I'd recommend a 450-500kV motor spinning a 14x7 prop if you want a responsive 3D plane.
Install the electronics you choose on the plane first and then check where the battery should be placed to get the recommended CG.

Thanks for the link Bidwin, I searched around and seen a similar pic, but never seen the post you linked to. Its very helpful. I have a 4130-12 540kv Cobra motor going in it with a 14x7 prop. It should be right around 1400 watts and 10lbs thrust at 22v. I hope the outrunner fits without hitting the canopy where it tapers towards the end.

Here is where duct tape is your friend. Place your model on a cg balance system, duct tape your motor and prop up front.

Then place your battery pack on top of the model and slide it around til the model balances. Now, see if that pack will fit inside the model at that location. Rather crude, but it works!

The battery doesn't care what angle it's installed. Just make certain it's secure.
