May I ask why? I have two Vortex 250 Pros and they fly just fine on the latest BF version supported by Immersion RC. I’m genuinely interested why you feel you need to upgrade. |

That said, I think there are a lot of new improvements coming in FCs and powers systems; and I personally love the form factor of the OG Vortex 250 body. But there seem to be limitations to what the old board will handle. Why not put in a basic carbon bottom, and equip it with modern hardware so that motors and batteries can be upgraded, Crossfire and GPS added, and whatever else you want to do? I still fly the damned thing stock. OG motors and all. But I do think about upgrading it all the time. Then again, why not just build something else and leave the 250 alone if it's still working? Well, it's the dilemma of the dreamer aint it? hahaha. I have another build on the bench right now. I'll let you know how I feel about the Vortex when that one is up and flying. I suspect however, that the enclosed body of the Vortex will end up being more enduing than any open frame on the market. We shall see. Does anyone know if the electronics in the Vortex 250 Pro have been conformal coated or not? I'm thinking seriously about taking her out for a bunch of snow flying this winter and am wondering what conformal coating should be done? This alone could be reason for upgrading to modern stuff... the ease of waterproofing, and the advantage of the closed Vortex body. Anyway, it's good to see guys are still flying and think about the Vortex. Cheers! Dennis |

Last update to the vortex was BetaFlight 3.2.2, which came out Nov 2017. We're on Betaflight 3.5 now. So it's not like it's an entire version behind, but a point release. I know how much each betaflight version changes -- and yeah, it's old at this point by a year.
Betaflight versions past that point have added a lot of work in the filters but I think the vortex is so old that I'm not even sure any of that is worth playing with. I'm glad we have 3.2.2 though with dshot commands so that I was able to replace all of the stock ESCs this year with DShot 600 and get that Turtle Mode. it flies so well that I really don't see it improving much that much with a newer version of btfl -- but... I'd like to see it updated to betaflight 3.4 at least in order to get GPS rescue mode most of all. Has immersion officially dropped support for the vortex at this point though or are they just waiting out betaflight for a bit compared to previous years? If they've been sitting on it I understand why. Betaflight has been aggressively releasing new versions -- even bardwell did a video about betaflight 3.5 where he joked a little bit about the "frustration" of doing all that work to go over 3.4, only for 3.5 to come out very quickly. |

Sorry for the late reply. Yes I adjust settings using BF via usb (Speedybee app). For those who don't like to tune, that's why BF3.5.x is so nice. Stock pids make everything locked in.

Hey guys, question for the pros.
I switched one of my spektrum RX antennas and when I did a test startup the motors wouldn't arm. I've got a beeping going on that I don't recall ever hearing and a green light is flashing on the FC board. RX is bound, camera working fine, OSD fine. ? What the heck do I check next? I didn't go into the OSD menu... I guess I could try that. Plug it into Betaflight? Could I have lost my arming settings somehow? The green flashing light (forward starboard side of FC) and the beeping... they seems to be the clue, but I don't know what they mean. Such a bummer. What's the white button for next to the blue light on the port side of the board? Thanks for any suggestions. d |

Another option is connect it to computer and check all your switch position and assigment. The button will reset the vortex to its original state and will start the wizard for setting VTX,, lights and other variables using the OSD stick controls |

Thanks Jumanoc,
I'll check that stuff. I did connect to BF and discovered that one of my motors wouldn't run with the motor test run program. I switched the signal lead to another plug (for the motor opposite) and the (originally non-running) motor ran fine. When I disconnected the second motor plug for the swap, I started getting two beeps instead of just one. Through a variety of testing is appears that the beeping correlates directly to a motor not working. The plug where there is a problem appears fine. I was working around the area in the rear, trying to put some antenna protection (fuel tube) in when it all stopped working. It seems unusual for just one motor to not be working. I will check my settings though. The one positive about this. It's gotten me off my butt to get my next quad build going. Thanks again, d |

I just got my second Vortex 285 bound and test flown. My previous one took an untimely dump and really destroyed itself. A friend of mine at the time I got the first one, made some on-screen programming and calmed it down a lot. I fly 90% LOS so FPV is not to much of an issue. I do fly it fast, back and forth but the new one is just spooky when it comes to my controlling it. I failed to copy the on screen programming numbers from the first one and I'm no longer in contact with the person who supplied them. I'm hoping that someone can give me a starting point menu for the on screen programing.
I have a 150 and it flies out of the box very smooth and controllable without any further programing. I know that the 285 can be set up in the same manner. Please don't suggest getting into Beta or Cleanflight programming. At my age, that isn't even a remote possibility. But I'm not afraid of the on screen programming. Thanks. |

Bear with me please... Is there a way to use a toggle switch to arm and disarm the 285? Mine arms easily with the throttle pushed to the right bottom but it refuses to disarm with throttle down and left. After a minute of stick movements it finally does disarm but its not as reliable as my little 150. I programmed in throttle cut on the 150 and it keeps the throttle from advancing speed but doesn't kill completely.
BTW: I'm using a Spektrum DX9 with a Lemon receiver. |

Hi guys, I had a software meltdown with my Vortex the last time I opened her up. First she wouldnt' arm and then one motor wouldn't work. Someone suggested I check stick movements and settings which I did and found that indeed all my settings had magically disappeared.
I reinstalled the configurator from Immersion and then went to BF and reset all the settings and ran the Wizard, now she arms but is still not right. Frankly I can't remember what's wrong, but it's not right. Sorry, it's been a while since I had time to play with this. Now I do have some time though and I'd like to know where do I begin with a complete system reset for this thing? What's the proper order of installation between the configurator and BF? So step by step - not too much detail needed - mainly the proper sequence - where do I begin on a new software install and is there any special prep needed before I begin? Per the thread above, should I be using CF rather than BF? Thank you. Dennis |

I found some Vortex 285's on ebay for around $250, but the lowest I could find was AirCraft-World for $199 |

John - As I commented on your video last night on your YT channel... Love my old Vortex quads too. Great Long Term review.
Time for me to dust them off and get them out for some fun. The Ummagawd version is a beast.... same motors as you have on yours in your video and yes they ROCK. The key to the Vortex (as I have said before) was that they came to the table with the BEST package out of the box. The systems are flawless and were way ahead of their time. TX controls of PIDS and Video, fantastic video with ZERO Noise issues and a great OSD. It took a couple years for the industry to catch up and realize these all were things we wanted standard on our ships. I am still a fan, even if my custom builds have more performance. The Vortex is still a blast and is still a great platform for anyone to enjoy. If anyone is looking for a NIB.... I have a couple spares of the 285 Vortex (the beast that started it all). I know some folks in posts above were hunting. The 285 is still a fun cruiser/explorer quad. PM me if interested. |
