RCG Scale Build-Off 5

Welcome to RCG's Scale Build-Off 5!

Summary:

Participants will build a “Sport Scale” electric motor driven, radio-controlled airplane model and demonstrate that it is capable of controlled flight. At the end of the competition, RC Groups E Zone members will be invited to select “Peoples’ Choice” winners from completed and flight-proven models.

Build-Off objectives are to:

o Foster interest in building sport scale electric-powered models
o Promote the RCG Electric Scale Kit/Scratch Built forum as one of ongoing interest to scale designers and builders
o Practise our craft, learn from others and do the best we can
o Have some fun

Build-Off Rules:

1. Models entered (“entries”) must resemble a full-sized aircraft design that was either built or proposed to be built (ie. designs that were produced as engineering, feasibility or other conceptual studies but which were not ultimately constructed). In keeping with the Sport Scale nature of the Build-Off, scale outlines may be changed within reason to improve flight characteristics or for ease of construction. Colour schemes for entries need not depict an actual full-sized aircraft.

2. Entries must be powered by at least one electric motor. The propulsion system of the entry need not resemble the propulsion system of the full-sized aircraft.

3. Building and covering materials may be of any type the participant chooses.

4. To be eligible for consideration as a “Peoples’ Choice” winner, entries must demonstrate that they are capable of controlled flight before the Build-Off closing date. Photos or videos of the entry in flight will be considered proof of flightworthiness.

5. Already started builds may be entered providing they have not been covered or painted by the start of the Build-Off.

6. Entries will be grouped into one of three categories as well as a special Novice Class, each of which will be considered for separate “Peoples’ Choice” awards. Categories are as follows:

a. Scratch Built – An original model designed and built by the designer “from scratch”. Existing design work may be entered as long as the design has not previously been built, published or sold.

b. Plan Built – A model built from plans by a builder other than the designer, or by the designer himself if the design has previously been built, published ot sold. Builders in this category must supply the parts and materials required to build the model.

c. Kit Built – A model built from a commercially available kit or short kit containing plans and at least some of the parts required to build the model.

7. In addition to the three entry categories, entrants in any category may ask the moderator to be considered part of a special “Novice Class” intended for builders who are building their first or second model.

8. Participants may submit more than one entry.

9. The Build-Off moderator may participate, but is ineligible for consideration as a "People's Choice" winner.

10. Any disputes will be brought to the attention of the moderator (Steve85) by private message, who will resolve the dispute at his sole discretion.

Coordinating Instructions:

- Registration for the Build-Off will be by posting participant members’ RCG user name, the proposed category for the entry (Scratch, Plan or Kit Built), requests to be considered for the Novice Class, the model to be entered, and a link to a build thread on this thread.
- Build threads will be entitled using the following format "Scale Build-Off 5 – Guillows 27" span Spitfire "

- Registration for entries will open and the Build-Off will start on November 1st, 2015.
- Registration will close on April 1st, 2016.
- Build-Off will close on July 15th, 2016.

Prizes:

To be determined.

Good luck and happy building to all participants!

Steve

Hi Steve

I propose to scratch build a DeHavilland DH103 Hornet, 1/9 scale, i.e. around 60 inch span. Probably starting from a vector outline drawing if it proves to be any good. Still to decide between balsa-sheeted foam and fibreglass for the fuse. I will spool up a build thread over the next few days.

All the best

Congrats, Alec, you're the first entry to SBO 5! I'll add your build to the top thread once you kick off your build thread.

Welcome aboard, Guy! I've added your build to the top post in the thread. Nice subject, too. Hard to believe brave young men did battle with Bf-109s in Gladiators.

Welcome aboard, Mat! Looks like a fabulous build. To move your thread, go to the first post in the thread and click on "Report" in the upper right-hand corner. Once the new page opens, click on the drop-down list under "What do you want a moderator to do?" and select "Move this thread". A new drop-down menu appears and asks "Please select forum", from which you can select "Scale Kit/Scratch Built". You'll have to add a few words of justification, something along the lines of "Move to Scale Scratch/Kit Built forum to enter Scale Build-Off contest." A moderator should move the thread within a day or teo.
