Single channel - one approach in the UK in the 1950's
I always keep a pile of model mags and books on the bedside table for a pre-sleep read and last evening the one I picked up was the SAM35 Yearbook No. 7. One of the articles I re-read was by Bill Trow and Gordon Rae and outlined their experiences with single channel radio in the early to mid 1950's. Apart from the fact that the article contained some three views of really tasty models beautifully drawn by Gordon Rae, it is also fascinating to read of experiments with variable angle rudder, subsidury pendulum elevator and the development of the "no current hold" actuator to prolong battery life.
We seem to be experiencing a surge in interest in flying models with simple rudder control, so for those who haven't seen this, here are the scans; sorry these are a bit small but they are the best I can do with my scanner. All the models drawn are nice, but I must say Gordon Rae's Ranger and De-Ranger really float my boat and would be lovely with modern equipment on RET and possibly electric power. Gordon always did design attractive models - you may remember his Luna Loafer and New Boy F/F, his Gamma Gull sailplane and Riveter team racer. |

Some elegant designs here. and I do confess that the vintage single channel designs are once again becoming a primary modeling interest.
