PLEASE NOTE: THE OLD POLL IS PAGE 1 AND PAGE 2 ONLY !18th of oct 2015
THIS IS FROM THE OLD POLL I know that all quads will need parts from time to time, but No one wants a money pit on there hands !! I have been running a poll over the net by asking around on youtube, r.c. groups, clubs, sellers, buyers, and on the www. to see what quad they would recommend to buy for this price. With this info I also did a lot of home work into the quads myself and came up with a lot of answers with out buying the quad and paying out big money to find the answers. I have saved myself and others out there thousands of /$$$ in buying the wrong quad ! Some will want to listen to what I have to say, and some will just do what they want to do. Its up to you, I am only trying to help us all in buying a quad that will be a good flying quad out of the box with out the so called fly-a-ways and the mad high MAINTENANCE !
We all love doing time in the work shop, but lets face it, a quad is for flying and there is no good buying a quad that will end up on the ground more then in the air! PLEASE NOTE :This part was from the old thread !

I was asking the same question, and I still don't have a good answer. My limited research shows the XK Detect X380 and the WLtoys V303 to look like clones, and the Cheerson CX-20 and the Quanum Nova look like clones also. What I don't know is how similar are the guts, or is just the plastic body identical? I really don't know.

There was a comment on one of the forums that the XK Detect trumps the CX-20.

I am looking to find a quad with a GPS in it. One other that I found was the Flying 3D X8. The big plus (maybe) on that one, is it feeds lots of nice telemetry back to the controller and it is displayed on the LCD screen. Seems to be the only one of the lot that does that.

All of these quads have tales where they have gone wonky and crashed, yet others claim they fly great. So which one predicts your future flying experience?

Hopefully some more experienced folks can chime in and point us in a good direction.

I was in the same boat as you guys about a month ago, was leaning very close towards the cx-20 and x380, mainly because everything is about ready to go when you get it. ---I took pretty much a completely different route, and went 250 fpv racer lol. i think i would have went with the xk detect had i not gone with the 250. carbon fiber body and the range was a big appeal

If you're looking for having fun flying and not taking video/photography, I'd go with a smaller quad (250-280mm) and learn to fly in rate mode. Then you can get into fpv, acro, and proximity flying.

I started with AP, but honestly, once I got 30 or so flights with my phantom 3 under my belt, it became pretty boring to fly. Plus, I didn't want to risk a $1500 quad doing things it wasn't designed to do. Now I'm in the middle of building a zmr250 to learn how to fly in rate mode. From what I've read, learning to fly in rate is the first step to learning racing, proximity and acro flying.

I agree with the above. I started with a Blade 350QX2, got a gimbal and Go Pro knock-off, etc. Flying AP gets BORING... Processing GB's of video footage of the same field also gets a bit lame too.. - neat at first, but the thrill wanes. It also requires really big money to get good results. Decent Go Pro for 400 bucks, and on and on.. (Really, if AP is your thing, get a Yuneed..) I basically decided that good AP is just too expensive, and that what I really want is to fly for fun, but with a Mobius strapped on to take videos, since gimbals are complicated and expensive..

(The Blade is great for fun flying though..)

So now I'm getting into 250's. It's a bit chaotic to figure out which components to get, and how it all goes together, but there seems to be some evolution towards more user-friendly offerings going on, so it's not totoal DIY. The huge disadvantage of a carbon frame smaller quad is that it's more robust if you crash. If you crash most of those on your list, you'd either have an enormous, possibly expensive, and tedious repair job on your hands. Or you'd just have to start over. The smaller carbon quads are good at surviving crashes. You just need lots of (cheap) props..

I ended up ordering a Spedix 250 hex with a quad frame, so I can switch if a motor or ESC goes out on the hex. I also ordered the Quanum V2 goggles and a basic FPV set-up. All for about 450 bucks..(including batteries etc.. But not including radio..)

I'm still waiting for all my stuff to arrive though, so I can't really comment yet about how complex it all really is. The Spedix (google buddys RC. Amain also has BNF versions on sale.., and Hobbyking just started carrying them..) is cool though because it doesn't require soldering, or, with the KK2, hooking up to a computer.

It really depends what you want - RTF for floating around taking video, or more fun fast flying(which you can also film with btw..), FPV, etc.. SO many options.. (too many..) One alternative might be to fly something cheap first, then research more what you want to go with.. The Dromida Ominus is a good, cheap, basic, and robust quad to learn to fly on....

Agree totally with above posts about big GPS quads getting boring. There are very different types of flying to get into. While it is tempting to get a GPS, expensive multirotor, they really are for aerial imaging - be it for photography or FPV inspection, etc. Otherwise, they are a different type of flying. It can be slow or totally autonomous. That's a lot of money to spend just to experiment with generally slow, stable flyers. If that's want you want to do, then go for it.

You can have a hell of a lot of fun with cheap small flyers. They are lively, quick and cheap to repair or replace. I have a Bayang X9 and an H8 and they are a blast. I finally ordered a Nihui U807 too. I also have MJX X600 which is more powerful and stable, and can fly a Mobius for some really nice basic aerial video and pictures - and it's cheap to maintain.

I haven't tried the racing FPV classes yet, but there's a totally different area as well. Challenging flying and FPV would be fun to try.

To answer your question, I would decide how badly you really want to do aerial imaging/FPV since this is what these slower, expensive multirotors really offer. There are much less expensive alternatives for really fun flying.

My 2 cents....

For fun do not buy GPS Quads, you would have more fun with a Syma X5C and save hundreds. But of the choices you showed in the pictures I would say the fun factor goes way up with the Vengeance racing quad, that would be my choice. Or even better an ImmersionRC Vortex Race Quad 5.8 GHz 350mW - IRLVXAT5G8350 $449.00 You will need to factor in the cost of some FPV goggles at some point.

The cx20

So far out of all the copters the CX20 is still in the running for a copter for me. Has any one out there got a CX20 with out Mods done to it that is still flying without any problems after a few years ?

Here is a very good video showing everything you get out of the box and the flight of the CX20 ! Take a look at the flight and see what you think !!!

Thanks.

Had a look at your X9 and X8 yep they would be fun, but there to small for me for outside flying.

Thanks for the excellent info, this will help a lot of guys out there.
