https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=549769 https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=530416 I built the BD-5 with DS in mind. It held up great until I stuffed it one day at well over 100mph. It was really tough, but so much was warped and ugly after the crash I scrapped it. It was very unruly to fly really fast. It's small and liked to dart all over the place, hard to see too. I uprated my torque rods to 1/8" (carbon tubes used for sheaths) and glassed my control surfaces with carbon. Never had an issue with flutter after that!.. and got some of the cool mouldie sounds out of it, but it was pretty heavy. 53oz. |

The day I was flying the BD-5 in the video it was pretty windy 30-35mph+ There was some very nice separation at times on the backside. I was doing some experimentation with my circuits to explore the different areas of the hill. I was nearly flying horizontal at times, and the plane never came past the peak of the hill! You can rarely do that! You can also do vertical loops if you have the balls, it's mentally draining to keep it up though. All of these ways of flying just accidentally happen sometimes, just go with it.. |

If BOON is above 15mph, and direction is less than 320 it should be good. I find the wind at Goat is 10-15mph more than BOON shows, as long as the direction is good. BOON: http://bml.ucdavis.edu/boon/ |

Unless you meant catching the 60oz Cobra at head level on top of Peaked Hill? ... the wind was very light and it took me about 20 tries! |

Here is a thread about the ASH: https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=443448
It was a great plane. It met it's demise on the front side at Goat I was flying close formation with my friend in a hanglider (real hanglider!). He said we were at 1100ft AGL when I decide to give him a show. I rolled it over and pulled back on the stick to dive straight down from him. About 500ft from the ground the tail fluttered and ripped off causing the main wing to pull out instantly and it snapped the HUGE oak spar, sounded like a big shotgun blast! I spent the rest of the afternoon hunting down all the little tiny parts which landed both on the front and backside of the hill, a complete loss! |

Another interesting video from 2006 at Goat. Duncan took this one. Shows the Sonoma Country Sheriffs helicopter landing on top of Peaked Hill in 35mph winds, VERY impressive, and dangerous.... I have to assume the pilot knew about the nasty rotor just a few feet behind him! One would hope! The elevator on my Spyder 2m jammed and I had to land with just my crow setting, which was only adjusting the flaps/ailierons, that was ... interesting! Some more Cobra flying, and a real honest hands free ground take off of the Cobra at the end! Very cool. I'll have to get some video of doing full speed touch and goes with the Cobra on top of Peaked Hill |

FYI, Road Closures in the area on Saturday due to a bike race in case you're going to fly Goat: https://www.levisgranfondo.com/info/road-closures
Many of the roads leading to and right at Goat will be closed during the morning/mid-morning. |

I really want to go tomorrow but it is already a 2 hour drive. The bike event won't help. Ouch.

-Hikers don't like 30mph winds, so there tends to be less of them, esp on top of the hill in those conditions. -There is bound to be gaps between groups of them, so always opportunities to DS. -If you're flying slow foam and stay up high you can probably be safe even if a few come up to the top... but I would never DS while they're walking up though. -Really it's fast speeds + hard planes that are the real scare, they can actually kill someone. I don't worry as much about the possibility of hitting someone with say a Zagi... not that I would buzz them or take any extra risk!! I think common sense reigns in here, just ask yourself, would I want to be hit by this plane right now? Fly accordingly |

Forecast is starting to look iffy..
There is a dramatic wind increase from 2-4pm, but is pretty low before and after that. This is an unstable bit of wind. Good days are marked by gradual and long lasting periods of wind. I'm not saying it won't blow, but there is a possibility it might not be as good as it looks, or be short lived and gusty. The graphical forecast image also shows a very sharp wind line right at the coast, this is also not a good pattern for reliable wind... it's better if it extends well inland. No wind registering at BOON yet: http://bml.ucdavis.edu/boon/ Bodega Buoy (several miles out in the ocean) is looking good, but that doesn't mean it will make it to shore: http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/station_page.php?station=46013 SF Buoy is looking terrible, just straight North winds, very bad sign ... for now, things can change though:. http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/station_page.php?station=46026 In summary, it could nuke for a short period of time, or it might barely blow at all, who knows... Regardless, I've charged up everything and will be there if it happens! |

I noticed the winds getting iffy. I really hesitate to make the trip with weekend and especially bike festival traffic. 5 hour road trip for a short and iffy window of good flying? I don't think I will make it down to GR today
EDIT: 2:30 PM Looks like a sweet ride available sometime this afternoon. Enjoy and video! Sorry I"ll miss it. |

I was there from 1-2:30pm or so. It was very gusty and just starting to pick up when I got there. It steadily increased in intensity and by 2pm or so it was about 35mph+. I could no longer DS the Cobra, just too much energy. Would have been a good day for big time lead sleds or very heavy DS planes... I have none built at the moment The Spyder would have been like a butterfly in a hurricane, I didn't fly it!
I went windsurfing later in the day and the winds hit 50-55mph+ in the bay. Lots of spindrift on the water, I was happy to make it back to the beach in one piece. Goat must have been off the hook, flying dirt/etc. It was the windiest day of the year, by far! Very unexpected based on the forecast. Everyone around here familiar with the wind was caught off guard. The bike race made the drive take twice as long, annoying but not terrible. Sorry no video, I don't have a setup to fly and shoot at the same time... |

Glad you got to fly. And the day ended well. I was sorry to miss you and the wind but hope to make the next one. I can lend you a 808 #16 hat cam when we meet if you want. Video is always cool. I'm adding more ballast ability to the JW60, probably AUW ~55 OZ.
